Maddie's POV

"Daddy!" I squealed almost tripping down the stairs to meet my father.

"Careful there, love, wouldn't want my little princess harming herself would we now?" my father laughed. Once I reached him be gathered me up in his arms and spun me around. My father had been away for almost 3 weeks on 'Business' with uncle Elijah.

Auntie Bekah came down the stairs with a laugh, she'd been watching me while Daddy was away because I was only 5 "It's good to have you back Nik, I almost started to miss you"

Daddy bent down and gave me a kiss on the head "I missed you" I whispered into his slightly curly blonde hair that mirrored my own.

"I missed you too" he smiled, pulling back, "How bout we all have some icecre-" he was cut of buy a loud crash outside. We all turned to see the door half way caved in. My father turned back to me,a sudden urgency in his eyes. "Mad, I need you to take the back door and go to our special place in the woods, don't come out till Rebekah or I come and get you, do you got that?"

I nodded tears welling in my eyes making them sting,"I love you"

Daddy and Bekah tried their best to smile. "We know, we love you too,now run."

I nodded and before they had even turned to the door I was gone into the woods behind our home.

I curled up in a ball, wrapping my arms around myself. I'd been waiting for my Dad for two days and the sun was finally lowering for the second night. I truthfully didn't know how much longer I could wait. I was starving and freezing cold underneath the branches of an oak tree that must have been as old as my family itself.

Suddenly I heard the snapping of a twig, and froze backing up into the hollow of roots at the base of the tree. After a while I built up the courage to call out "Daddy? Rebekah? Is anybody out there?" I asked hesitantly. I stood up now, A makeshift steak hidden behind my back.

All of a sudden an unfamiliar man steps out of the shadows, when he sees the steak in my hands he immediately raises his hands in surrender. "Whoa, there kid, take it easy I'm not gonna hurt you,"said the guy," My name is Stefan. Stefan Salvatore"

Form the sound of his heart I could tell he wasn't lying so I lowered the steak. Stefan took a cautious step toward me, and as he did, a wave of sent came of him. He smelled like the forest, and bourbon. But mostly he smelled like blood, animal blood. My stomach grumbled and I had to fight the urge to let my eyes go dark although I couldn't help but let a couple of tears stream down my face in fear.

Stefan took another step and bent down in front me with a smile," My names Madison Michaelson, but you can call me Maddie." I said with a smile, considering my solution a friendly face was really welcome.

"So, Maddie uhhh. Where are your parents?" Then he frowned, studying my face, "Have you been crying Maddie?" he asked, this time his voice was gentler.

"Yeah" I frowned, debating on how to tell him what had happened. Then I remembered a trick my father had taught me. "I can show you" I raised my hands, asking for permission to enter his mind. His only response was a nod and I raised my hands to his temples showing Stefan everything, My Dad, my Auntie, the door braking down, but when I showed him my memories he also got my memories. The fear, the trauma, the sadness, the loneliness.

When I finished we were both crying "Well, then Maddie" Stefan seemed lost for words "how about you come home with me, you could meet my brother. Maybe you could even become a Salvatore." Asked Stefan with a slight smile.

I pretended to ponder the idea when I had really made up my mind the second he asked, "Like a sister?"I clarified.

Stefan smiled "Like a sister"

I nodded "okey doki". I took Stefan's hand as he lead me away and I couldn't help but glance back toward my home. Then I shook my head, I really didn't want to think about what had happened, ever again.

As I walked past the trees my shirt caught against a rough branch and I flinched looking down to see a small cut on my arm, barely oozing blood. Stefan flinched, turning away and I frowned. Your vampire, aren't you?" I asked.

Stefan only nodded and I could tell he didn't want to talk about it. "But I don't drink from humans, only animals, now" he grinned, swinging me in to his arms, causing me to giggle "Lets goooo" and then we were speeding through the forest, and far,far away from my old life.
