Chapter 3

“Naia!”  I heard my mom calling from somewhere in the house.  “It’s noon, get up!”
I bolted upright.  How the hell did I manage to sleep in so late?  I checked alarm clock, and sure enough, it wasn’t set.  I growled.  Jamie was the culprit I knew it.
Standing up, I stretched upwards and walked to the kitchen, prepared to have my cereal.  My mother was cleaning the dishes in the sink from yesterday, which I realized I was supposed to do.
“Sorry mom,”  I apologized, kissing her on the cheek.  “One of Jamie’s new friends was over, and I watched a movie with them.”  Mom nodded, and smiled at the sink.
Reaching into a lower cupboard, I pulled out a box of cereal, grabbed a bowl, but when I went to pour it out, sawdust fell into my bowl.
  “Jamie!”  I yelled, very frustrated.
“He’s out, sweetheart, so don’t shout…”  my mother said, giving me a weird glance.  “What did he do…  Oh dear.”  When she noticed the sawdust, she shuffled over to me and lifted a handful of it out and let it trickle out of her hand.  Then she had the audacity to laugh!  “You’d think he had better things to do.”
My mother looked like a normal mom, straight shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes and a round motherly face.  She even wore aprons all the time, and old style dresses.  But she did not act like a mother.  Whenever Jamie pulled pranks on me, she would laugh and high five him if he was around.  Same with when I pulled pranks on Jamie.  It was the funniest thing in the world to her.  It probably stemmed from her having no siblings, but still!  A little chastising would be nice.
“I’m going to get him back!”  I declared.  “It was his fault I slept in and his fault my cereal-”
I was cut off by a spout of loud laughter, coming from the door leading from the kitchen to the living room.  I spun around and again, met the blue eyes of Kieran.  His eyes held the mirth he was trying so desperately to hold in, and I couldn’t help but forget my decision to not be attracted to him the night before…  I could see him struggling not to laugh, but I can imagine it was hard standing next to the Laughing Machine, my brother.
“I got you good this time!”  Jamie said between laughs.  Tears were forming at his eyes.  “Twice, sis, twice!”
I turned around to hide the smile on my face as an idea struck me.  I grabbed the box of cereal, still half full of sawdust, stalked over to Jamie, and dumped it over his head.  This time Kieran couldn’t hold back his laughter and he keeled over.  Even I had to laugh at the shocked look on Jamie’s face.  I could hear my mother snickering behind me.
And the best thing; this was a normal morning for us Sloans.
“That’s not even my revenge, Jamie,”  I smiled evilly, already planning what I was going to do.
Jamie glared and me, shook off the sawdust, and stomped off somewhere else.  I expected Kieran to follow, but he actually leaned over and began scooping the sawdust into a pile.
“You don’t have to do that!”  I exclaimed.  “It’s Jamie’s mess, but I’ll get it.”
“No no, it’s okay, I’m the guest.”  Kieran smiled up at me before continuing.  “But you could get me a broom and dustpan.”  I nodded and fetched them for him.  When I handed them over, our fingers briefly touched, and it was like a very good feeling electric shock.  I quickly pulled my hand away, watching as he froze for a moment.  He seemed to be doing that a lot.  Then he began sweeping up the mess.
“So what are you doing today?”  He asked, walking over to the garbage in the kitchen.  I hadn’t even noticed my mom disappearing.
“Oh, probably the same as every day.  A little bit a school work and then I’ll go for a run.”  I realized how lame that sounded after I said it, so I blushed.  “I guess I don’t live the most exciting life…”  But I did love to run.
“You’re not hanging out with any friends?”
That caused me to hesitate for a minute.  How would I answer that?  I tried not to let anyone realize just how friendless and lonely I was…
“Um, no, not today.”  Or any day..
“Well, would you care if I joined you on your run?”  he asked with what looked like excitement in his eyes.
  “You like to run… too?”
“Of course, and I know it’s much better to run with someone else.”
“And what about my annoying brother?”
“He’ll be sulking all day after what you did to him.”  Kieran laughed.  “I do not want to be around that.  Besides, I’m sure he’ll understand.”
I nodded and smiled.  “Okay, we might as well head out now then.”  I was oddly happy he was coming with me.  Even though I knew this was a bad idea, I couldn’t help but really want it.
