shades of humanity

i am a rainbow.

red like my blood, your blood

even though my heart may be ivory and steel ( oblivious to love itself or the mere concept of pouring yourself into someone that isn't your to keep )

i can't stop the scarlet fire flowing through my veins

and my cheeks are crimson when i think of you

of you on me, in me

orange like the sunset we watched together

you tracing delicate circles on my palm

you will be safe here with me, my darling

if only that was so

for that evening has desaturated, withered

yellow like sunlight

the way it caught the soft hazelnut of your hair

i caught it in my palms that day

it was your sunlight, my sunlight, our sunlight

because then we would always have the warmth of each other to keep us company

green like your eyes

they told me stories that died on your lips

a maze i would be happy to get lost in

now your gaze rests on another

and i sit and long for the emeralds that nestled themselves in your corneas

blue like the ocean

i could drown myself in you

sink deeper and deeper until

my skin, my bones, me and everything that i am or want to be

fades into a cerulean dream

i am a rainbow but when you left the world turned grey

oh, why does it always have to be you?
