The next day was our first day of school

The next day was our first day of school. Darla talked nonstop, which was hella annoying. I turn to my left and see Freddy standing there with a dorky grin on his face.

"Ready?" he asks.

"A little nervous, I guess." I reply.

"Don't be. You've already got the coolest kid in the whole school as your friend."

"Billy's cool, I guess," I say, trying no to blush.

"Ah, did I detect a hint of I dunno, liking towards Billy?" he teases.

"Shhh!" I whisper, hitting his arm repeatedly.

"I'm joking! I meant me. I'm the cool kid."

I scoff. "I beg to differ."

The first thing we saw was a huge security scanner at the front entrance. Is this even legal?

"This is our security scanner. Like in an airport. It's totally safe," Darla says.

"We know what it is. Is she always like this?" Billy asks Eugene.

"Silence makes me uncomfortable," Darla says.

"She's almost never uncomfortable," Eugene mutters.

After checking our bags, Darla runs up to us and hugs us as a farewell for the day.

"You don't have to hug us all the time. We're not actually siblings." I tell to Darla.

"I'm sorry," she mutters sadly. Her looked turned from happy to sad before trudging over to Freddy.

"I-I didn't mean to make her—" I try to explain, but Freddy just waves us off.

"Flight or invisibility?" Freddy asks,
as he sits down beside Billy and takes of his crutch and it lands loudly on the floor. "If you could have flight or invisibility what would you pick? Everybody chooses flight, you know why?"

"So they could fly away from this conversation?" Billy says in a monotone voice.

"No, cause hero's fly! And nobody doesn't want people to think they're a hero, right? But...but invisibility, no way. I mean, that's pervy. Spying on people who don't even know you're there. Sneaking around everywhere. It's a total villain power, right?" Freddy basically yells to us but we tried to ignore him and walk out.

Billy threw his trash away then placed his tray on top. I did the same.

"Then, they did this study, and this is a real thing. They asked people the same question: 'What superpower do you want?'. But this time, they made it so the answers were anonymous," Freddy rambles on. "And-And most people since they knew they were secret, they chose invisibility. And I think that's because cause most people don't feel like heroes on the inside deep down. You're running away."

Billy paused at the door of the bathroom looking back.

"I mean, one of you stole my Superman bullet."

Billy's eyes flicker to me. My eyes flicker to him.

"And dude, I get it. I get it. You guys survived being screwed over way too many times. You don't trust anyone. That's the thing with invisibility, you'll end up by yourself."

"We didn't steal your dumb bullet," Billy mutters and he opens the bathroom door and enters.

I walk to my locker.

"Y/n, wait. I didn't mean—" Freddy starts.

"It's fine. Just forget about it, alright?" I call out to him, walking away.
