Round #9

45 1 18

Several of us are considering Season Two, and since it was your idea and I already see the current ZEDS is now marked “Season One,” I suspect you will be continuing on to Season Two as well. :-)

And, since we’re being given a chance at a change of scenery, so are you! I gave you a kick-ass hotel for Season One but I suppose everyone needs to change things up once in a while.

So, below, you will find seven options. You will need to pick one and reference it somewhere in Chapter 9 of ZEDS. Also, please post it below in the comments once you decide because I’m a totally nosy, impatient person and can’t wait to see what you pick! :-)

One other criterion for Round 9: Murphy’s Law makes life really difficult for one or more of your characters at this location: 50.824335, -1.453626. Which of Murphy’s Laws is up to you (if you Google it, there are a gazillion of them), but the one in question must be quoted somewhere in the chapter so we know which one you had in mind. You can even probably make up your own Murphy’s Law, as long as it’s identified as a Murphy’s Law when it’s quoted in your story.

In short, for round 9 you need to:

1. Pick a location for season 2.

2. Let Murphy’s Law wreak havoc at 50.824335, -1.453626.

Your story, assuming you recover from the 3-Day Novel-induced Red Bull poisoning, is due on September 14th, 2014 at midnight BST. The maximum word count is 5,000 words.

Enjoy!

SEASON TWO CHOICE OF LOCATIONS

--------------------

Amazon World Zoo Park (Isle of Wight): 50.660997, -1.138715

Pros

It’s on the Isle of Wight, which isn’t too far from the original hotel.

There are also lots of outbuildings and pre-made enclosures for anyone wishing to set up some livestock.

Cons

It may already have “livestock”… of the exotic variety! Tigers anyone?

--------------------

Querqueville Fort, near Cherbourg, France:  49.669534,-1.680362

(note: I couldn’t get the Streetview directly in the fort, but from this location and from satellite you will easily see its exterior.)

Pros

If Jersey is where they wanna be, this is pretty darn close!

It’s already a fort, which should make it easy to defend.

Cons

It’s on the mainland of France, so if Jersey is known as a “safe spot”, this may be a hotspot for zombie activity from all over the continent.

Parlez-vous français? You may have some “lost in translation” moments. It could be interesting! :-)

--------------------

Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes: 51.996601,-0.742684

Pros

Home of the Enigma machine and other really cool WWII artifacts, including some survival gear that may come in handy – you never know.

Lots of space and buildings on the museum property.

Cons

It’s near London, so if you thought Cherbourg might have a lot of zombies, this place might be worse!

Bit of a hike (~ 130 miles) from the coast of the New Forest to this area, requiring them to either pass tackle London, or take a detour to avoid built-up areas.

--------------------

Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth, Wales: 52.623717, -3.839405

Pros

Alternative Energy = no dependency on petrol, with lots of other technologies available so group is not tied to a high-risk energy source. Lots of building space with self-sustainable options.

Freakin’ beautiful location.

Pretty much in the middle of nowhere so shouldn’t be a zombie hotspot.

Cons

Far: 240 miles by land, and not particularly close to the coast.

--------------------

Portland Bill Lightouse: 50.514803,-2.456127

Pros

Really good view of surrounding area. Plus, how awesome would it be to live in a lighthouse facility?

Should be easy to make runs from this location, and it’s reasonably close to the New Forest Location.

Cons

Not a whole lot for buildings in the area, and could be a challenge to set up a farm in this location.

--------------------

Island of Sark: 49.431125, -2.360332

Pros

Just off the coast of Guernsey, and is small enough that the zombie factor should be manageable.

Appears to have some farmland and pastures, so should be possible to become self-sufficient once established.

Cons

Pretty small so may need runs to Guernsey or Jersey

Definitely need a boat to get there, and get around once there.

--------------------

The Costello School, Basingstoke: 51.261677, -1.079055

Pros

Lots of space and equipment. It’s also set up with some sort of fencing already.

It’s surrounded by parks that could be converted into fields or other useful property.

Not too far from the New Forest (45 miles or so), compared to some of the other options.

Cons

It’s in a town that is not isolated, so might have quite a bit more zombie activity than some of these other locations.
