“State your business?” Shouts the village gate keeper, as he pokes his head through a hatch in the weathered wooden entrance

“We are the Kings guards.” Announced Kan proudly from atop his steed “Here to seek an audience, with the fisherman called Damik Hotan.”

“Oh, pardon me, Sirs.” Humbly apologises the gatekeeper as he pushes back one of the wooden gates and strikes up a line of mud with its uneven wooden bottom “We don’t get to see, the Kings guards, in these part.”

“That’s quite understandable.” Responds Kan as he and Ornoc trot their horses through the small entrance, ducking their heads to avoid the short archway “So which house is Damik Hotan?” Kan asked as he surveyed the twenty or so tiny wooden shacks, that had clearly been battered by the sea winds over the years and were in some case in need of immediate repair.

“Third on the left.” Answered the gatekeeper pointing down the sandy path “Just knock, we are a very friendly village, especially for the Kings Guards.”

“That’s what I was hoping.” Muttered Kan to Ornoc who rode close beside him

The so called Kings guards dismounted their steeds and hitched them up onto a poor excuse for a fence.

“Will the horses be safe here?” worried Ornoc as the fence swayed as his horse jolted back his head.

“They will be fine, we won’t be long.” Confirmed Kan as he surveyed the storm beaten door to the Hotan home “Have you got the bags of gold?”

“Yes.” Replied Ornoc clutching two small tied sacks that he had remove from his steeds saddle bags

“Good” nodded Kan

He then proceeded to wrap his knuckles on the wooden entrance, Kan could hear some feet shuffling towards it on the other side and then the door flung open.

“Kings Guards, my lady.” Proclaimed Kan as he entered uninvited as the surprised older lady looked on awe

“Damik, the Kings Guards are here.” bellowed the lady as she turned and called through the run down home “We are so honour to have you here, the whole village, has been anticipating you arrival, and you have come so quickly, you have caught us all by surprise, we were expecting you to arrive tomorrow?” babbled the woman

“We rode very fast.” Mentioned Ornoc as he tries to draw the woman’s attention to the two sacks he was holding up in front of his chest

“It’s probably best the other villagers don’t know of our arrival.” Remarked Kan as he fiddles with his wispy beard “We don’t what to cause any fuss, until we have verified the shard, so many of our trips end in disappointment.”

“Oh, I understand.” Disappointedly agrees the woman

“Welcome, Sirs.” Greets an older man as he appears in the room from a side door, he’s clutching cautiously with both hands a gleaming shard which radiates shades of green and orange as he approaches them
