Chapter Twenty

I've never found myself in more awkward situation when I realized that the person, I was ready to kill, lying under me was in fact my mate, and not Harley. The panic that had filled my veins, and caused my body to shake with nervousness was now gone-vanished into thin air as if it were never there. I felt like I was back at the pack house, in the safe confines of our bed, wrapped in Colt's arms. I was on a roller coaster that was only going up, and I've never been so relieved to find safety.

Then I realized another thing. Everything that went up was bound to go down due to the stupid law of gravity. Now, I found myself plummeting towards the Earth as Harley's cold voice cut through the silence, jarring me out of my daydream. I had fallen from cloud nine.

"Sorry to break up this reunion, but that is my mate you are holding," his menacing voice said.

I slowly shifted off Colt, my limbs still awkward from not being in my wolf form in awhile. I would of bowed my head and whimpered under normal circumstances if I was alone with Harley, but this was different. My mate was by my side, and I felt ten times stronger. And all of the anger and resentment I had been holding back abruptly resurfaced.

"I. Am. Not. Your. Mate," I attempted to ground out, but it only came out as pitiful yips and yaps due to my wolf body.

Harley cooed, cocking his head to the side, and looking down on me as if I were a lost child. "Don't be scared, baby," he whispered, outstretching his arms towards me. "Come to me, and everything will get better."

I took a step back , a growl ripping from my throat. Harley looked momentarily stunned, and dropped his arms back to his sides. The look he gave was one of nothing, but complete hurt and betrayal. He bowed his head, his black hair falling in front of his face.

"What did you do to her?"

Gone was his cold, menacing voice. Now, he sounded like a broken child-like a child that just lost their entire family in a blink of an eye. His voice wavered as if he was on the verge of crying.

Colt looked at Harley wearily before standing up. He extended his hands as if he was trying to approach a scared and abused animal. "I don't know what you are talking about. All I want is to leave with my mate-"

"My mate!" he yelled, anger spiking. "I just got her, and will not lose her." He was heaving hard, fists clenched at his sides.

Then Annie emerged from the room, a desolate expression marking her face. Tears were welling up in her eyes, threatening to overflow down her pale cheeks. She locked eyes with Harley. "When will you ever get it?" her dejected voice asked. "Amity doesn't belong to you. I belong to you."

That was what shut up Harley, and everyone else. Was Annie saying that Harley was her mate? Does that mean all this time Annie was helping her mate find his supposed mate? I suddenly felt sick. The world rotated swiftly in front of me as if I were spinning. That's torture. How could you cope with the world knowing your soul mate didn't love you back though you were meant for each other. The Fates had designed you, so you wouldn't want to be separate from your other half. Now, all of that was messed up.

Annie took a hesitant step towards Harley. Harley merely stared off into her direction, uninterested. She took another step, and another, and another till she stood right in front of him. A hopeful smile etched on her face, Annie outstretched her arms. She looked at him with absolute longing.

"Please," she begged.

There was a beat of silence before a sharp smack cut through. Next thing I know, Harley had his hand raised, and Annie is clutching her swelling cheek.

"I don't love you."

That bastard.

Without even a moment of hesitation, I pounced on Harley, anger fueling my veins. I caught him off guard, and took that as my chance to sink my canine teeth into his shoulder. He bellowed in pain, and crumbled to the ground. I was seeing red, and wanted blood. I wouldn't stop till Harley was begging for mercy. I had never felt this feeling before, but let my body succumb to it. My instincts took control.

Harley gripped my fur, and tore me off of him, dislodging my teeth from him. Grunting in pain, I landed on my side. I expected to be pounced on immediately, and braced myself for the pain. After a few seconds when I felt none, I scampered up on all fours to realize that Colt had shifted into wolf, and was currently facing off Harley, who was also shifted. Dakota had Annie in her arms, whose hair was covering most of her face, but I could still the tears.

I resisted the urge to throw myself in the fight, fighting back my instincts. This fight would be over soon enough. Harley was no match for Colt, and even Harley knew that. He had gone into a defensive stance, dodging all the attacks Colts was hurling at him. He was growing tired though. His dodges and blocks getting more slow and lazy. Colt had begun to land attacks, swiping him with his claws and nipping him with his elongated teeth.

Harley's knees buckled beneath himself, and that's when I knew it was all over. This nightmare wouldn't ever end if Harley continued to live. That was the sad truth. He had caused to much pain-to my pack, colt, me, and even his own mate. She will forever live a life of pain because of him.

Colt pounced on a squirming Harley, and lifted his paw to his next. Before making the strike, he turned his head to Annie, his eyes wide. Colt was silently asking if it was okay-okay to end the life of her only mate. Annie took in a shaky breath before solemnly nodding. She turned around, burying her face into Dakota's neck.

There was an echoing snap, and the sweet feeling of being free. My roller coaster was rising again, and this time there would be no malfunctions.
