To Matthias Corvinus, from your servant and Knight, Ezzelin von Klatka

Know first that my eyes are not deceived. I am desperate for holy relief, for the deceased comes to me in the night. The death spirit addresses me as Azzo. No, he is not spirit, but flesh and bone. He is Dracula. I will give him no earthly name. This vision speaks of my future loyalties and a desire to make me, as he says, one of his own.

In the light of the sun, I have check'd the coffin of Vlad III, and his body remains. In truth, it appears more alive this day than ever. The temptation to assess his wound is strong, but I will not give in to my groundless suspicion. I must return to Hungary before my mind departs entirely.

I hereby abandon my charge to accompany his body to Transylvania. The great stress of this is too much on my weak soul.

FROM CHRONOSCOPE — note on bottom of page written hastily

His body is missing. I thought it probable he might be stolen for reward, but the circumstance is something more frightening. This speaks of madness, I accept, but I swear on my family crest that, as I observed his coffin in fear of my nightly terrors, the whole of this man disintegrated to nothing but a burial garment.

The only possible explanation I can willingly accept is that my evening drink had been poison'd in order to alter my perceptions while his body could be extract'd. I have failed you. I accept the responsibility of my actions and will return for the necessary punishment. I leave you to judge as you please, and only give you a relation of facts. One thing I am certain, distance from this place will afford me a welcome reduction of wickedness
