Once Upon a Time

Once upon a time, when we were just kids

We lived without burden, happy and care-free

But time has passed and things are not the same

You’re slowly slipping away from me

So long ago we were best of friends

Sisters not by blood, but by heart

Now you’re fading from my life

Leaving me depressed, sour and tart

I must face it, you’ve grown up

And left me in the dust

With your face so solemn and grave

It’s an expression I can’t make myself trust

I remember when we were both so young

When I asked for the truth you would abide

Though you shrug and tell me it’s okay

I know you’re hiding something inside

Sometimes I stare into your face and look

For the friend in you that’s no longer there

But your sad smile, the bitterness in your eyes

Is too much for me to bear

I tried to hang on to you, tried to pull you back down

Bring you back within my speaking range

But I am becoming more and more like you

And I’m not sure I like that change
