Sentinel: the king's elite force of lawmen. They keep the peace. They are lead by a Head Sentinel, who appoints a second, or substitute, to serve in his stead in case of injury or death. Sentinels are separated by divisions-- first by city, and then by district. The Head Sentinel in charge of the capital, Migos, always oversees the goings-on of the rest of his subordinates, and works closely with the king. The current Head Sentinel of Migos is Don Valentine Julián de Casillis y Hanover.

Maestro: teacher or master.

Indio: literally translated as "Indian", this word was used in colonial Spain to describe an indigenous person from the East & West Indies-- the Philippines and the Caribbean, respectively, to name just two. In the case of this book, indio and its feminine form, india, is used to refer to someone who is of Tondan descent.

Hospicio de Reina Letizia: Hospice of Queen Letizia. Established in 1890, just a year after the late queen's death by her son, Don Miguel Alejandro Vicente de Aguilar y Borja. Queen Letizia was well-known for her contributions to orphanages and the underprivileged, going so far as to volunteer at hospices when she was needed. The hospice that was named for her was built to honour her memory- and selflessness- for generations to come.

The Citadel: the headquarters of the Sentinels of Migos. It's a massive stone tower that has survived two civil wars and bombardment by no less than five Vesennan armadas. It's high enough to survey the city from the top of it, and besides being fortified to the teeth, it houses dormitories for all of the Sentinels employed in the king's service.

Mija/hija: daughter.

Mi amor: my love. Used affectionately, of course.

Mi primo/mi prima: my cousin. Used by the king to refer to a member of higher nobility.

Mi pariento/mi parienta: also my cousin, but meant for those of lesser nobility.

Mestizo/mestiza: in the real world, this is a word used to describe someone of mixed heritage in Hispanic countries. In-universe, a mestizo or mestiza is someone who is of mixed Edeiran heritage. It's often used to describe a person who is half Edeiran and half Tondan.

Don/Doña: a member of Edeiran nobility. Sentinels may also become a Don, even if they are not of noble birth-- for example, Eden Tudor or Pedro Torres. They are bestowed nobility if they are of high enough rank.

Señor/Señora/Señorita: equivalent to Mr/Mrs/Miss in English.
