                                                                            Chapter 13

"Would you stop fidgeting? Your making this a lot worse then it needs to be." Mina said, she had been trying to brush and style my hair into a semi-formal state, but she kept pulling and yanking and I in turn kept fidgeting.  It was Saturday - the day of Austin birthday party.  Since I had agreed to go (partly because of Grey), Mina had appeared a few hours ago to help me get ready.  Even though I didn't really know there was anything to get ready for, I mean it was a party, not a formal gala. However, Mina had insisted that since this was going to be my first time out and about, I needed to look as good as possible.  When she showed up, she had a plastic dress bag on her shoulder; it was black so I couldn't see what was inside.  She said that she had gone shopping and gotten me something 'nice' to wear, but she wouldn't let me see what it was until I was all done.

"I wouldn't be fidgeting if you would just ease up on the brush." I said reaching back to rub a spot on the back of my head where it felt like she had pulled a whole chunk of hair out.

"Hey!" she smacked my hand away.  "You'll mess it up."

"You do know that Austin's party is not a formal event right?" I told her looking at her reflection in the mirror.

"I know, but that still doesn't mean that you can't look nice."

"But I don't want to look nice." I almost whined, "I just want to go and get it over with."

Mina stopped brushing my hair altogether a looked at me through the mirror, her eyes narrowed and her mouth pressed into a hard line. "You know, if your going to have that attitude then why did you agreed to go in the first place?" Mina and Austin didn't fully know why I had the sudden change of heart about assisting Austin's party.  All they knew was that I had changed my mind, thought they suspected Grey had something to do with it.  Even thought he actually did, I couldn't possibly tell them that or about what happen between Grey and me in his car without sounding like I cared more about him then I should, even though...

"It's something I have to do. Okay?" I said, Mina raise a sole eyebrow. I expected her to ask me what I meant, but she did not, instead, she went back to finish brushing my hair.

"Kailah might be there. " She said after a few minutes of silence. I tensed.

"I thought Austin hadn't invited her." I said unable to fully mask the alarm in my voice.

"He didn't, but you know Kailah, she'll worm herself in anyhow." I took a breath and tried to relax but failed. The mare mention of Kailah and that she might be at the party had pushed me right at the edge of backing out. I couldn't help think that she was the reason behind all the other disastrous times I had assisted a party. "But Emma, even if she's there she won't do anything to you." Mina sounded sure of herself when she said that, and in an odd way in reassured me, and besides, Grey had promised to look out for me. And that was something to at least look forward to, right?
