From under the bed William heard his step-mother wail, and then commence a desperate sobbing and he knew what had happened. Even before anyone came to tell him he knew what had happened.
He held his ears tighter just to try and keep out the sounds from the hallway - his step-mother's crying, the raised voices of his uncles and from the front of the house a great howling from his Aunt Margaret.
Papa where are you? He asked silently. I'm so scared I don't know what to do.
There, there, William, he heard is father's voice inside his head. I'm here with you. Everything will be alright.
I'm sorry Papa - I'm sorry I didn't give you the medicine.
