Chapter 3

****

"So Tiffany came up to me and said, "oh I know way more than you think little miss know it all." What is she even talking about?"

I twirled my straw around the multicolored smoothie nudging at the fruit chunks, while sauntering at the side if Bryce's head. After a moment of bitter silence, my high hopes for a response suddenly faded. I cocked my head, surveying the mesmerized twinkle in his eyes and smiled to myself. Turning my head slightly to focus where he was gazing at, my eyes landed on a statuesque girl twisting her auburn hair around on finger, and curling the corner of her rosy lips into a grin. I observed her flash him a wink and I instantaneously turned away in disgust. Could I go somewhere with Bryce without any girls drooling over him? Each girl he came across glued their eyes upon him, entrancing him with what they thought was their bet assets.

Even though everything about them nauseated me, I couldn't blame them one bit. It was kind of difficult not to keep your eyes off him. He had everything every girl dreamed to have in their fairytale prince. His charismatic attitude, adorable shaggy hair, and those fascinating eyes you could get lost in for days. It was enough to make any girl to want him.

"Hello! Earth to bryce. I'm over here!" I said taking a gulp of my strawberry smoothie, glaring at him over the rim of the cup.

"What?"

He swiftly turning around and focused his cerulean eyes on me that basically popped out against his caramel skin.

"Nothing. Just...never mind." I said silently rolling my eyes.

He flashed me his most apologetic smile and added, "I'm sorry. I was just distracted."

Being like myself, I scowled at him through squinted eyes before storming out of the diner with my grip tightly clasping onto my bag.

I just couldn't stand it when his attention was on someone else instead of mine when I was trying to begin a conversation with him. It frustrated me even more because he knew that was one of my pet peeves. Hence, he took advantage of it so he could annoy me.

I took deep breaths, calming down as the cool wind wrapped around my body sending a wave of comfort. I stuffed my hands deeper into my pockets, staring straight ahead of me.

I counted down the seconds until I heard the faint thumps of Bryce inch closer to me.

"Milan, wait up!"

With a satisfied smirk on my face, I dramatically twirled around nearly bursting into a fit of laughter as I watched him hunch over to catch his breath. And here I thought he was Mr. athletic that was perfect at every sport he came across. Apparently not track, I thought with a grin.

"So what was this snot saying to you?" He asked as a smile crept across his lips.

I couldn't help but blush as he walked closer, flashing me that heart-warming grin that always made my knees buckle. The way way his chestnut hair was almost perfect, with a few strands side swept across his forehead -

Wait...what was I doing? I'm not supposed to be thinking about my best friend like this. Snap out of it Milan! Snap out of it!

"Milan, did you hear me?"

I instantly snapped back into reality, while slipping free from his warm grip that was grasping my shoulders.

"Yeah, I did. And I told you already but you were to busy checking that girl out." I added before beginning to walk towards the direction of my neighborhood.

He jogged forward towards me until our arms nearly brushed against each other.

"Me checking her out? You've got it all wrong. She was the one that was doing that, not me! I just so happened to glance in her direction when it happened." He stated in a matter-of-fact tone.

"Whatever." I managed to grumble between my lips.

"Whatever is a clear sign of jealousy. Are you jealous Milan?" He cooed.

"No way!" I said nudging him with my elbow as I turned my head to hide the embarrassment written all over my face.

I don't know how he does that. How every word he utters nearly makes me blush. He such a charmer, what could I say?

"So I take it that you're not that upset right now...about you know-"

"Yeah I know. I'm just...I don't know, I'm Confused...Upset. Perplexed. Just so many things and I'm just trying to you know - block it all out."

He bit his bottom lip and nodded slowly, continuing to stroll forward by my side.

"So any news about Paige?" He asked, digging his hands into his pockets and turning the conversation serious.

"I don't know yet..."

I glanced up to the sky and then at the scenery all around me. The deserted park with two rusty swings where we first met, and the diminutive ice cream shop where we became best of friends instantly brought back memories. I squeezed my eyes shut and clamped my fists in an attempt to stop the salty tears that were slowly forming at the corner of my eyes, daring to spill out onto my cheek.

A warm grip wrapped around my waist, pressing me against their warm, toned body. Slowly, I looked into the reassuring eyes of Bryce.

"It's going to be alright Milan. We're going to find Paige,ok?" he said almost in a whisper like tone.

I nodded towards him, confident that everything he said was true until he reluctantly let go of me and walked me the rest of the way home in silence.

I traipsed up the cobblestone steps and onto my porch with a slight grin on my face.

"Thanks Bryce." I muttered under my breath before unlocking the door and stepping into the relaxed feeling of air conditioning.

"Milan, is that you?" A voice called after me in the kitchen.

"Um, yes..."

I didn't bother to lock the door, instead I made my way towards the kitchen until I was leaning against the door frame.

Gathered around the table was Paige's mother and mine examining a piece of paper, that was sitting in the middle of the table. My mom leaned back in her chair with a sigh, pushing her bangs out of her face. Paige's mother on the other hand was sitting unmoved, trying her best to hold in the tears.

"Mom, is everything ok?"

My palms became sweaty as I felt the tension on the room rise. She looked at me in the corner of her eyes, flashing me a simple frown. I slowly made my way towards the table and picked up the crisp piece of paper between my cold finger tips, and read it to myself.

Just to let you know, Paige is doing alright. But she may not soon. She ruined everything for me and I plan to do the same for her. Starting with the ones she loves. I know It'd pain her to see all the suffering they'd go through because she's gone and it's just what she deserves. There's so many secrets he hasn't told you, what a shame she can't tell you now.

I crumpled the paper in my hands, becoming both infuriated and startled. I glanced at my mother not peeping a word, instead twiddling with her thumbs.

"What do they want with her? Why can't they just leave her alone? We have to call the police!"

This time, Paige's mother, Maya was the one to step up.

"At the bottom it said to not involve the police. They said they're watching us." She whispered.

My vision became blurred from the burning tears forming until finally they came rushing down my face, streaking against my flushed cheeks. I tried to stay strong, but with every second without Paige, I found that staying strong was not as easy as it sounds.
