Chapter 9: Zoey

Minnie was absolutely gorgeous. And I was so jealous. Like, jealous not in the way I wanted to tear her into pieces, but more in the way that how can someone be so beautiful. I didn't have anything against her, but a lot of things against God. How can he be so unfair?

Sure, Alexander and the guy with him looked good, both of them rocking the long coat and the scarf look, paired with jeans and sweaters but it was the girl who was catching my eye. She was dressed simply: long, loose sweater paired with skin tight dark blue jeans and thigh high boots. She looked amazing with her blonde hair tied up in a high ponytail.

Apparently, Ronnie must be feeling the same because before I could even start introductions from my end, she spoke up, moving away from Albus to stand in front of Minnie. "Hi, I am Veronica! You are very pretty! Let's be friends!" She said in all alacrity.

Minnie in turn, just laughed and it was literally the cutest thing ever. She looked a bit younger than these two guys she was with. I could see some resemblance between Marcus and Minnie. Maybe they are brother and sister?

"The chimpanzee in front of you is Veronica," I started with the introductions as all turned to look at me, "and this guy is Albus." I pointed behind me where he was standing. Alexander and Marcus nodded at him in the way all guys do before we were told to take our seats by the usher.

Somehow, we were divided into three groups of two. Veronica and Minnie took the front, with Marcus and Albus following them and Alexander and I taking the rear as we entered the hall. I let out a surprised breath as Alexander pulled me a bit closer so that a person carrying a lot of snacks could pass us by easily.

"Which row are you in?" Alexander asked as he checked his own ticket.

"My seat is 16H. Yours?"

"18H. That's great!" In the darkness of the hall, I was able to see his smile and it prompted one of my own. I kind of felt disappointed, though. I wished we could have had seats together, but I guess my life can not be like a romance novel every time.

As it is, it will be difficult to sit next to a guy who you rejected. I tried to rationalize. It was in vain, though. I knew I was lying. Meeting him here was like fate. All I could feel in that moment outside the hall were butterflies in my stomach.

As we all settled down, I turned around to look at who was sitting where. Veronica and Minnie had decided to sit together and were chatting like they have been best friends all their life while Albus and Marcus sat beside their respective ladies on either side and were mainly concentrating on all the snacks they had bought. Only Alexander and I were seated separately. He shot me a smile as some guy sat between us both.

I pouted, accepting that nothing could be done. As the first half of the movie began, I tried to concentrate, but I was acutely aware of how close Alexander was. My skin was all prickly in anticipation and he wasn't even next to me.

Like, seriously hormones, calm down.

After a while though, it was really boring so I just stared at the screen blankly, appreciating Ryan Reynolds' acting and the plot, but not being into the movie like others. The guy beside me was so excited that the entire time he was bouncing his leg. However, I couldn't help sighing in relief when the interval came.

Alexander gave up his seat to get the one beside me as the guy in the middle went out of the hall to use the washroom or get more snacks. I smiled at him as he offered me some of his nachos and salsa, taking one.

"Are you enjoying the movie?" He asked as he took a sip of his cold drink.

"Yeah, I love the way he breaks the fourth wall every ten minutes."

I enjoyed the way Alexander laughed. It was a very rich sound which was pleasant to hear.

"You looked kind of down, though. Do you want to sit with your friends? I could ask Marcus or Minnie to exchange seats with you."

"That's very sweet, but no thanks. I am okay." I grinned before remembering a question I had meant to ask Alexander before. "What happened to finding a fake wife? Any updates on that?"

"Well, it's not been a good couple of weeks. Every woman I met rejected me. My ego is taking a huge hit." I couldn't control my laughter as Alexander placed a hand on his heart in mock despair.

"You asked others as well?" I told myself the feeling I was feeling was just curiosity.

"Yeah, like not two hours back, I proposed to Minnie."

"Minnie?!" In shock, I turned around to look at her and caught both of them clicking a picture of Alexander and me. I flipped them off, before turning back. "Isn't she a bit...young?" I asked hesitantly. Maybe she is older than she looks? Maybe Alexander really likes her and I would be offending both of them if I said the wrong thing?

"Yes. The age difference between us is almost six years. But you see, I had to try. Desperate times. It really is a pain to shift from one location to another." He winked, making me smile.

"So plan B is still in the cards?"

"Actually, this is my farewell party." With my widened eyes, he rushed to complete whatever he had to say. "Please do not tell this to Marcus and Minnie. They do not know I am taking a flight out tomorrow. For them this is my bachelor engagement party."

"Bachelor engagement party? There are things like that?" I wondered out loud.

"Out of all the things I said, is that the part you chose to concentrate on?" He laughed as I grinned, embarrassed.

"Sorry. I wish I could do something to help. This country will miss you." I gave a mock salute.

He chuckled. "You can agree to be my fake wife."

"Sorry Alexander. I can only help, not perform miracles." I winked.

He was about to say something when the guy from earlier came back, carrying nachos and salsa and a burger. "Hey, this is my seat." I expected Alexander to get up and move back.

"Oh, is it okay if you can sit here?" Alexander pointed to his previous seat while my heart just imploded. It was something which I had not seen coming. Butterflies reactivated in my stomach.

Everything this person does causes a reaction in my body. How is this even possible?

"Sure, no problem." The guy sat down as the lights of the hall dimmed again, signifying the start of the second half. Alexander turned towards me and smiled, making me gulp and look away, suddenly shy. I licked my lips as I focused my gaze on the screen.

This time, I really enjoyed the movie.
