Recap:

Sighing slightly, I shifted around on the bed, trying to get more comfortable. Then the nurse’s door swung open, and Mr Jackman entered, followed by Mr Thompson. His eyes shifted around the room, taking in my bandaged ankle and shame-faced expression. He fixed both me and Stacey with a piercing glare and his voice rumbled like thunder as he spoke.

“Miss Miller? Miss Turner? There had better be a very good explanation for this.”

Chapter 23

An edgy silence filled the room, and I could feel the disapproval radiating from the headmaster’s figure. I opened my mouth to speak, but immediately closed it again. I had so many words and explanations racing around my head, but I couldn’t seem to get them out of my mouth, so I just stared listlessly at the floor.

“I’m waiting,” Mr Jackman snapped.

Nervously, I took a sideways glance at Stacey and I could see the traces of panic in her eyes. I knew she’d love to get me in trouble, and I’d started the fight after all, but I could see she definitely didn’t want to go into the reasons behind the fight.

“I’m guessing this is about the rumours,” Mr Jackman said, and we both looked up, startled.

“I thought so,” he continued, with a note of grim satisfaction. “Now, will one of you start explaining or will I be forced to keep you both in detention until I know what happened?”

I shifted uncomfortably on the bed and Mr Jackman’s eyes zeroed in on me instantaneously.

“Miss Miller,” he said tersely. “Explain now.”

I sighed slightly as I tried to formulate my sentences. Everything made perfect sense in my head, but it just wouldn’t come out right when I tried to say it out loud.

“I-I went to confront Stacey about the rumours, because I knew she’d started them,” I began hesitantly. “I just didn’t know how she knew. I thought maybe it was Jo-Jo who’d told her, but it turned out I was wrong. Stacey made a nasty remark about Jo-Jo and I lost my temper and slapped her. She retaliated and we started fighting.”

I trailed off as Mr Jackman held up his hand for silence. His eyebrows were faintly creased together in puzzlement.

“When I asked you this morning whether you had any ideas who started the rumours, why did you not mention Miss Turner?” he asked, almost accusingly.

I gulped and did not reply, my eyes nervously flickering towards Mr Cooper, whose face was still blank and emotionless.
