Stars

Even as children
We were taught to value the little things in life
We would make wishes on stars
And try to find the constellations

We would gaze into the night
With wonder and awe in our eyes
All to find that one star
That we would entrust our wish with

We would either speak with wide eyes
Or eyes firmly shut
And then utter our heart's desire

Back then
Our wishes would include material things
Like a new stuffed animal
Or maybe something you saw on TV

But
If you were to look out
On a clear, starry night
What would you do now?

Would you carry on with childish antics?
Finding one star to trust with today's wish?
Or would you simply close the window
And return to sleep?

Would your wish be for something tangible?
Someone?
Something eternal?

Many of you would wish for love
Or help
Or peace

My wish is similar to all of those
But very different at the same time.
I wish for one thing

That I will never have to be alone
