“Wake up! It’s already half 2, Ray!”

I groaned. Damn. I guess passing out and staying out wasn’t an option after all. I contemplated faking it from here on out, but as the time Blake just read off sunk in, I jumped up. Half 2 and here I was laying in the bed beside Blake, when I should have been at work -begging for my job.

“Bugger! I need to go. Did the doctor come in yet? Will he be back?”

Blake just rolled her eyes.

“No he isn’t in just yet. The nurse said he had surgery this afternoon and wouldn’t make it in until after hours. So you have time to go see Mr. Russian Handsome Voice.”

I sighed with relief, I hadn’t missed him, than registered her words. Lifting and eyebrow I smirked.

Mr. Russian Handsome Voice? Really Blake? You couldn’t come up with any better than that?”

She just shrugged. I had to admit it was probably for the best I had never introduced them. One look at him and she would have so many other names for him…none of which would be appropriate. I learned that when we ran into Dean at the market one weekend.

The whole mess was humiliating! Of course she thought he was good looking and made no point to hide that fact. My barely 18 year old baby sister was shamelessly flirting with my 28 year old boss. I’m pretty sure at some point she molested him, but him being the gentleman he is, would never confirm nor deny my thoughts.

He simply said she was young and sweet, and far better behaved than most of the adult women he entertained.

“Raylan! Do I really need to get security up here escort you out?! Stop procrastinating and get to the office. Mr. Markoff made it sound like he really needed you.”

I tried not to laugh at the irony. Oh yea, he really needed me alright. I thought as visions of what we had done in his office played in my mind. Did he need me?

NO! Don’t be stupid, he probably just wanted to see how pathetic I was. Throwing myself at him. Ok, yes, he came on to me…but honestly, who would believe that?! No one, which was probably why he had done it.

“Ok, fine I’m off. I’ll try and be back before 5. If the doctor comes please have him call me right away! Don’t let him leave unless he calls me! Got it?”

After a series of yea-yea’s and a few eye rolls, I finally left with a massive amount of mutant dragonflies (butterflies just weren’t big enough) dancing in my stomach. I still had to run home and get my contract before heading to see Luka.

I sat there in the office, shaking. Luka wasn’t in when I had gotten there so –as Dean instructed- I went to wait for him in his office. Dean was just as puzzled as to why Luka wanted to see me but didn’t think too much on it.

“He’s probably just trying to give you more time with your sister. He knows he needs you, so I couldn’t imagine him letting you go.”

His words were not as reassuring as I would have hoped. Nonetheless, I could only sit there and wait to find out. I couldn’t leave until we had spoken and I knew for sure I was still employed.

After about 10 minutes (and still no sign of Luka) I got up and walked around his personal space. I had never really taken the time to look at the few photographs he had lining the mantle of his fireplace. One figure stood out right away.

A young petite brunette with large blue eyes and a lovely smile was sat in the middle. Her picture free from any dust, shiny –as if he’d just polished it that morning- and well taken care of. I wondered briefly if she was someone special to him, a past girlfriend he never got over perhaps.
