Close Encounters of the Cruelest Kind

I am as young as I’ll ever be-- after all, I’m human.

I’m as bold as I ever was-- after all, I’m sane.

A momentary lapse, a breach, for an unspoken contract defiled…

I trusted you, you know.  After all, I’m weak.

Expendable, replaceable—

That’s what I’m told,

But I will always remember your eyes of cold fire--

For hate has a face, and she has a name.

I suppose I’m unfamiliar with her wiles,

Unaware of her insidious simmering.

It isn’t my fault.

I can’t fix what isn’t broken.

I am forced to believe, to accept, and to realize

That we grow and change, and so do our ties

Made in blood or water, laced with ice.

My hands, though clean, are cold.

I’m tired of promises you haven’t even made,

And of secrets I don’t intend to keep.

Of struggles I have lived, and you deride.

After all, I know I'm not perfect,

but I'm not to blame for what you despise.

I owe you nothing.

I have no shame.

I tell no lies.
