Chapter Nine

Dwayne's POV

"No, Dwayne, please stay. Fuck her." Asher's eyes were welling up. My heart was breaking. I loved him. I knew that now. But I couldn't let her ruin this. I had to deal with her first.

"She will do something horrid with my home. Please understand." I pleaded. I tried to fill my eyes with as much apologetic emotion as I could.

Without anymore warning, I turned and ran out to see Kate standing there wide-eyed with a brick in her hand. I froze to the spot and put my hands up. She had hit me before, but never with a weapon.

"Put it down, Kate. You don't have to do anything stupid today." I side stepped towards her, trying to get her to put the brick down. She didn't say anything until I was close enough to touch. She pulled me close by the hair on the

back of my neck and kissed my forehead, slowly... Deliberately.

"I warned you, Dwayne. I told you to stay away from him out of school hours. I was nice to you. I allowed you to see eachother in school because I knew you had to for work. Is this how you repay me, Dwayne? Is this how you thank

me?" She whispered in my ear. I nodded slowly, pushing her gently towards her car.

"I just needed to speak to someone, babe. My head isn't good. That's all, we just spoke." We were close to the car now so I stooped to open the car door for her. I must have moved too sudden, because she pushed me up against

the car, so that my back was pressed against the passenger side door. I squinted at her in the dark. "You know I'd never hurt you, Katie. Let's just go home."

Kate held me against the car. I had no way of getting away without hurting her so I just waited for her to let go.

"No!" She shouted. "No! I told you and you didn't listen. You have to learn!"

The last thing I saw was her hand coming towards my face.

Flashing lights.

Black.

Kate's POV

Something dropped from my hand. I was breathing hard and my forehead was dripping with sweat. I wiped my head with the back of my hand and my hands were wet with some black liquid. I looked down and saw his limp body

on the floor, slumped against my car.

In the dark, it looked as if the same black liquid on my hands, was trying to crawl down his face. I frowned. Confusion. Then the brick caught my eye by his feet.

The brick from the construction site? I didn't realise it was still in my hand. I remembered the rage. The betrayal. The drive. The horrible thoughts. But I thought I had put it down. I didn't, did I?

"Dwayne?" My voice was too small to be heard, so I cleared my voice and tried again. "Dwayne? Are you okay?"

He didn't reply. My heart began to race. What had I done?
