"Hurry up Jade! You're going to be late!" My Dad called from downstairs.

As bloody usual.

I had been trying to get ready for the past half hour but it seemed nothing was going my way. I sighed and continued to try and yank a comb through my untamable curls. I had made the stupid mistake of letting it dry naturally last night after my shower. I knew now that that was an unforgivable mistake; it looked like a bird had made a nest on my head!  I guess I should blame Dad for giving me this unruly hair, my Mum and my younger sister were lucky enough to have luscious beachy waves which looked perfect no matter what.

     Stupid genetics!

     "I'm nearly ready!" I replied.

That was such a lie, I was nowhere near ready. My eyes swept over the various clothes that were scattered all across my bedroom floor, various pairs of shorts from my days at the beach, a fluffy dressing gown that I had practically lived in and a million pairs of shoes. I had already tried on three white shirts this morning and none of them had buttoned up - I guess I had gone up a few sizes over the summer, must have been all of those Doritos.

Today was my first day of sixth form and I was anything but prepared. I had spent the summer binge-watching Netflix, going for walks and eating anything in sight. I had failed to do any of my reading for English class and hadn't even glanced at my vocab for French. In my defence my lack of work hadn't just been due to laziness, I had suffered my first big breakup and boy did it suck.

I had been dating Darren for over a year after we had gotten together at Lucy's sixteenth birthday. He had been cute and funny and always made an effort to make me feel special - until he had dumped me over a text. Four simple words, I can't do this anymore, had ruined my shopping trip with Violet, Lucy and Rebecca. A few people had looked over when I had begun hysterically crying outside Anne Summers. It had taken me a while to get over him, but the distance between us over the summer holidays had definitely helped.

"You have five minutes Jade!" My Dad informed me from downstairs.

I let out a huff of frustration and began digging through the piles of clothes. Why was I born a girl? If I had been born a boy I probably would have been ready about half an hour ago!

"Are you aware that your rooms a swamp?" A mocking voice questioned from the doorway.

I glanced over my shoulder to see my fifteen-year-old sister, Adrianna, standing in the doorway. She was already dressed for school in the blue and white uniform however, her feet were clad in clunky combat boots.

"Are you aware that the teachers are never going to let you get away with those hideous shoes." I snapped back.

Adrianna and I were like cat and dog. We never saw eye to eye on anything, but this summer it had become almost unbearable. Our parents had begun to avoid us, unwilling to speculate our screaming matches which only seemed to result in tears and slamming doors. Adrianna and I had actually been sort of friends when we were in nappies. That would have been hard to believe if it weren't for the horrific photographic evidence of us smiling at each other in matching yellow dresses paired with awful bowl cuts - I had no idea what Mum had been thinking. Now, however, I don't think Adrianna would piss on me if I was on fire.

"Jade, come on, time to go!" Dad yelled. I could tell he was reaching his patience limit.

I finally found a pair of tight black pants and an elbow-length white shirt under my bed that miraculously fitted me. I quickly tied my tie loosely around my neck and winced when I saw the Easton High School colours, yellow and blue.
