324- Chapter Five

Mable picked me up when James's eyes began to droop. She immediately badgered me when I called her, but I shot down all questions.

"Bye James," I said softly.

"Bye Jackson," he returned, a sleepy, crooked smile lighting up his face. I hugged him tightly, then left and waited outside.

On the way home the only conversation we had was my sister informing me uncle Darryl had left while I was out and bid me a warm goodbye.

When we pulled in the driveway I shot out of the car and only stopped when I was inside. She soon caught up.

"What happened?" she finally asked, the curiousity winning out over all else.

"Don't want to talk about it..."

"Why not?"

I just stood silently.

"Come on, tell me," she quiped mildly.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Tell me."

"No."

"Please?"

"Not happening."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't," I said, trying to add authority to my voice. I didn't think it worked too well; for such a nice person she could sure pick up a dictator personality sometimes.

"I got you a new jacket, it was going to be a surprise. For the fall," she told me, taking a bag hidden in the closet. Was she seriously trying to butter me up?

"Ooh, can I see that?" I slipped it onto my shoulders. "Still no."

"Come on!"

"No."

"Yes!"

"Did you cut your hair?"

"No," she scrunched up her face in confusion and agitation. "Why?"

"Exactly."

"Please!"

"No."

"I love you Jackson."

"I love you too."

"Then tell me?"

"No."

"Please!"

"Nope!"

"Why not?"

"Just because..."

"Fine, I'll wait."

"Okay you do that."

"..."

"..." We both paused our childish back and forth.

"Can you tell me yet?"

"Can pigs fly yet?"

"I get it..."

"Good."

"..."

"..."

"..." we exchanged a glance.

"..."

"..."

"Silence is nice." I said wistfully.

"You're going to tell me, really you are."

"Really I'm not."

"Uh huh."
