Chapter 4

Cassie's POV

Gabby wasn't right.

I looked up at the screen in with wide eyes. "Inok? They're infiltrating the Inok Industries?"

Erickson had his arms stuffed in his suit pants pockets, eyes on the large screen before us. He was probably a good 20 years older than the rest of us. He was taller than me, dark hair graying. "I've been given word that I might have a traitor here and that they're from the Inok Industries. If they successfully complete the mission of getting the Intel, they can't be the traitors. Simple."

"But what if they die?" I questioned.

"If they die...then they couldn't have been the traitors then either."

I kept my face expressionless as I stared at him. This is the first time that I've ever heard Erickson talk about his fighters like they were nothing. New or not, they shouldn't be sent out to die.

"Why didn't you send one of us with them? Someone with experience?" I asked.

"Because it's a suicide mission. Why would I send one of my best agents out there?"

I pursed my lips and started for the door. "I'm going with them."

"No, you're not." Erickson said. "And that's an order."

I turned to him, almost giving into his order. I was with him for almost a decade and I never once questioned what he tells us to do. But this, this was too far.

I looked him square in the face, my expression serious. "Well, this is just one order I can't follow." I told him before exiting the room.

"Cass!" Gabby shouted after me once I gathered what guns I needed from the armory. I slipped two pistols around my waistband and threw two machine guns behind my back. I put on my fingerless gloves as I walked out with Gabby in tow.

"Don't do this, Cassie. Erickson gave you an order." She insisted.

"I know, his order was to let the recruits die. I'm not going to have that." I told her.

"He could have you killed for disobeying him. Are these three recruits worth that? Having the whole C.O.R.E against you?"

I thought about it for a moment, wondering why Erickson didn't stop me once I even left his room after telling him that I was going either way. I don't believe anyone deserves to die this way though.

"Yes." I told her and walked into the elevator.

It took me a good couple of hours to get to the rendezvous point before the recruits went at it. The building looked secluded and huge in the dark. The recruits were surprised to see me there. Especially Nick in his dark, tight clothes. I had the urge to rip them off, but it's hardly the time for that.

"What are you doing here?" He asked me. I noticed he was the one holding the map. He must have been the lead. My eyes looked over his form dressed in dark closes. His cheeks and nose were tinged red from the the cold and I couldn't help but find that cute.

"To help." I said, eyeing the large warehouse building before us. All the lights were on. This was going to be tricky. "So, what's the plan?"

He furrowed his brows and glanced at Drina and Jem. Drina let out a sigh, nodding. I gave her strange look and wondered why he needed permission from her. "Okay, we planned to infiltrate through the west ventilation system. Until we hit right here where the Intel disc is." Nick started, pointing at a red X on the map.

"What about the lights?" I asked, turning to face him. This was their first mission. They had no idea what to do. Erickson would have gotten them killed. "If we're going through the vents, we have to come out somewhere to get the Intel. The lights can't be on if we want to do this quietly. We have to make it look like a faulty wire. Unless, you guys don't want to do it quietly."
