~Chapter Nine~

She has everything perfect, you fool! Meaghan screamed, directing her fury at Ari. We all know that! So why don’t you?

Who is we, Alexandra, my dear sister? Ari’s smug, unconcerned voice increased Meaghan’s seething emotions. She fought to control herself as she paced the floor of her room, grateful that Ron and Michelle still hadn’t returned.

Ari! You know damn well who “we” is! All of us on Earth, that’s who! Meaghan sent profanities in every language her brother’s way. I’m surprised you actually answered  me, you lazy, good-for-nothing boss of mine! When were you planning to help us? When were you going to plan out our strategy? When, Ari? Tell me!

All in good time, Alex. You have to be patient.

Meaghan clenched her teeth together, quaking with barely contained anger. So help me, Ari, I will destroy you. I don’t give a crap that we’re siblings! And you should know by now that Alexandra and Meaghan aren’t patient!

Yes, I’ll give that to you. But I also know you better than anyone, Alexandra. Remember that. I’m your twin brother. I know your strengths, your weaknesses, your likes, your dislikes. And I especially know why your hatred runs so deep for them.

Meaghan remained steady, refusing to give in to Ari’s provocations.

All I can tell you is to use that to your advantage. Bye now!

Meaghan gasped. Ari, get back here! Ari! Ari, get your mind into the circle again! Seriously, who promoted you to commander? Ugh!

Meaghan flopped down onto her bed, ferociously rubbing her temples, trying to relax her senses. Locks of hair brushed against her hand, reminding her, yet again, of her dreadful confinement and punishment. She would do anything to regain her life, the life that she and her family deserved to live.

She could remember happier times. Times of childlike peace of mind and perfect liveliness. Times of friendship and light. Now, the remnants of that life were dark, distant, and ominous.

Meaghan rolled onto her stomach, her face being held in place by an overly-fluffed pillow. Taking a deep breath, she let herself go. She screamed her heart out for what seemed like ages, her chest shuddering with every inhale.

Finally, she allowed the wave of sadness, of longing, to wash over her, and the tears fell by the dozens.

The moment my eyes closed, dreams and nightmares toyed with my mind. The gladness of sleep evaporated instantly as my imagination took control. My nap was more exhausting than being awake.

I appeared to be in a forest. Shadows lurked everywhere I turned; the thick canopy of leaves above me assured that. The trunks of the trees were thick and strong, extending into blurry images of gnarled branches and fragile leaves. The trees themselves were unidentifiable, being too tall and dreamlike for me to observe much.
