The griffin (also spelled as griffon or gryphon) is a mythological creature with the tail, body, and back legs of a lion, and the head, front legs, and wings of an eagle. A few legends stat that only the female griffins have wings, while the males have spikes on their back. Griffins are known to guard and protect treasures, gold, and such. Griffins are also said to find gold in mountains and build giant nests out of the gold. The griffins are very hostile over their nests, and will kill anything that imposes a threat. The griffin lives in the Rhipaean mountains, and they don't have to eat, but they tend to attack and eat men and their horses.

Griffins are also known for their speed, agility, ability to fly, eyes of an eagle, and strength and courage of a lion. Also, Hippogriffs are said to be the offspring of a horse and griffin, even though griffins are said to hate horses.
