Chapter 6

The screams of the children filled the air and Matt turned around to see that Faith was smiling. It had taken him a few weeks but the hard work paid off. Nara was buying some food for them so that they would not be too hungry. Matt felt blissful at that moment. Faith was now happier even if her cancer had taken away her eyes. The doctor said that it was too late to save them but he was still glad that she was with him.

The wind blew into their faces and he held her hand, “Faith, here, drink some water,” he pressed the water bottle into her hand and she took a small sip. Unable to resist, he kissed her lips, “I love you.” He felt her freeze and frowned, “Is there something wrong?”

“Matt, those are very important words. You don’t want to say them too casually,” she said slowly.

“I do love you, Faith.”

“I’m still not cured and I don’t know how long I will be with you,” now, she let her tears flow.

“I just want to treasure this moment. Faith, please, I don’t even know how long I will live,” pausing, he carried on, “We will find you the donor. We will find him or her no matter what,” his face was determined even though she could not see him. However, she felt his tight hug and snuggled into his arms, feeling safe.

“Sorry! The queue was so long, lunch anyone?” Nara chirped happily. Plonking herself onto the mat, she laid out their lunch and let Matt feed his girlfriend. She knew he was doing all he could to make sure Faith was happy but she had seen him in despair before. It was heartbreaking but she didn’t mention anything. The situation was bleak, the doctor had trouble finding a donor that matched with B- blood type. It was a rare blood type, most negative blood types were. Nara just kept on praying that Faith would hold on until a match arrived.

The trip to the beach did help put some colour back into Faith’s face. Her cheeks looked slightly pink and she was much happier than before. Matt was staying with Faith while Nara took her turn during the weekends. Faith had stopped working by now as she was often tired after the chemotherapy. Her hair was dropping but the cancer was still spreading.

Eventually, she requested to stop going for the sessions. It was a waste of time, she felt and it was the first time she had fought with Matt. Nara was caught between them and though she tried to soothe things over, Faith would not budge from her stand in not going. Matt wanted to keep up the hope that she would get better despite the fact that the doctor had said the cancer cells were spreading even faster, her kidneys were starting to fail.

It took them a few days to cool down while Nara took leave to stay with Faith. “Faith, here, drink some water.”

“No. I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Look at my bed. It’s wet and I don’t think my kidneys are working.”

“I’m calling Matt.”

“No!” however, Nara was out of earshot and she was not interested in hearing Faith’s protests. She had had enough of their silly spat. Here, Faith was dying and they still had the energy to fight over a chemo session. Soon, Matt arrived to take Faith to the hospital and drove them to the dialysis centre for processing. This was even more painful for Faith. Her arm was so thin that the nurse helping to prick a hole for the machine to process hesitated before going ahead. The four hours at the centre was painful and Faith struggled not to cry.

Matt wanted to take away her pain while he watched the process. “What else can I do, Nara?” his voice mournful.

Nara blinked away her tears, “I don’t know. I can be there for her. You can be there for her. We just can’t take her pain away if that’s what you are asking.”

Matt gave a bitter laugh, “It looks like you can read my mind a little too well. I do want to take away her pain, I just don’t know how. The bone marrow transplant is now too late. I just called the doctor and he said that her condition is too weak and the cells are killing her. I don’t want to lose her, Nara. But what can I do to keep her alive?” Matt cried violently.

Nara could not do anything besides patting his back awkwardly. She felt herself crying with him and they stopped long enough to bring Faith home after making another appointment for her next dialysis session. Matt carried a sleeping Faith into her bedroom and stayed there just staring at her sleeping form.

“I’m a lousy angel, Faith. I can’t even find you a good donor before your kidneys failed. How can I keep you? How?” he whispered before leaving her room. He didn’t see her tears just as he closed the door.
