“Hays, are you alright?” My mother shrieked in her worried mother tone. Ayden and I were in the living room taking care of Axel who was still unconscious on the couch when my family burst through the door.

When I glanced to my side where Ayden was, he disappeared. Well, he did tell me about not being able to reveal himself to anyone besides me.

“What happened to Axel?” My father bellowed next, pointing at his bandaged neck and I motioned for them to calm down. “Mum, Dad, it’s alright. Axel just accidentally cut himself because of a sharp branch on the way home so he came here for help, and fell asleep.” I lied smoothly but gave myself a mental beating.

I didn’t like lying… but it was for the sake of Ayden and Zayne. Plus, I didn’t think they’d believe me if I told them Axel got possessed by a hot non-angel-immortal guy and started slashing himself, right?

“Oh darling, I’m so glad you’re okay… Someone warned us to take care of you and your sister is still asleep in the car. She nearly got into an accident! Luckily a kind stranger saved her and called us to inform us about her close shave. That girl actually sneaked out of the house to meet her friends!” My mother babbled on and I nodded, knowing who I inherited the rambling gene from.

Suddenly, the front door opened once again and in came my sister, Amerthyst. Her straight, shoulder-length jet black hair was slightly ruffled at the top because she slept in the car.

“Mum, I’m just going to bed now… ‘Kay?” Amerthyst inquired sheepishly and my mum nodded while I stood up and went to hug my sister. “You okay, sis?” I held her shoulders and she gave me a weak nod before heading up the stairs.

“Um, mum, dad, is it alright if Axel crashes the night?” I bit my lip hoping they’d agree because I would have to carry him all the way back to his house in the freezing weather.

“Yeah, sure...” My dad mumbled and put his arm around my mum’s shoulder, “We had a jumpy night, so we’re off to bed now. Good night, Hayzel.” He trailed off as they disappeared up the stairs.

“Night,” I grinned at no one in particular and went back to the couch where my unconscious friend was. The grin was wiped off my face when I saw the bandage around his neck and guilt started gnawing endlessly at my gut.

“It’s Zayne’s fault. He made that drunken guy drive straight towards your sister but I appeared just in time. Sorry I had to leave you so suddenly.” Ayden’s voice echoed from the corner of the living room. Jumping slightly at his suddenly materialisation, I sighed, “It’s alright, thanks for saving Am.”

Ayden strode towards the couch and patted my head. I snapped up to look at him, blurting a burning question, “If Zayne is the opposite of a guardian angel, what is he?”

“He’s a familiar spirit; a demon. But he’s also a fallen angel, someone who broke the rules of Heaven.” He spoke as if disclosing it wasn’t illegal. Was it?

“Oh,” I uttered dumbly, “And could you do me a favour of carrying Axel to our guest room upstairs?” My voice lowered because I felt bad for making him carry Axel, but Ayden simply smiled, “Gladly.” My heart sped up at his genuine concern for me.

He carried Axel in his arms as if he weighed nothing and climbed up the stairs to the guest room. “Ayden, do angels sleep?” I tapped on his shoulder and asked.

In return, he chuckled, “We can go days without sleeping but it’d weaken us. So yes, we do sleep.” My mouth formed an ‘O’ and I nodded to myself as we entered the room.

After placing Axel on the bed, Ayden tucked him in and we went back to my room. “So, where do you sleep?” I asked again, as curiosity struck once again. It was my inquisitive nature to do that…

“Somewhere you don’t know.” He stuck out his tongue cutely and I couldn’t help but hug him like a teddy bear. “Thank you for everything!” I whisper-squealed in case my parents thought I was talking to myself.

Shock flitted past his face before his heart-throbbing smile was back, returning my hug. “You’re welcome.” His eyes smouldered and I grinned up at him.

We bade farewell and he simply disappeared. Letting out a sigh, I quickly went to my bathroom for a nice, long and hot shower.

Once I was done, I put on a yellow tank-top with matching shorts and stepped out into my warm bedroom. Fortunately, I cranked up the heat before I left the house earlier on.

Amerthyst was sitting on my bed, flashing me a weak smile, which surprised me. “Are you okay? Having nightmares?” I questioned concernedly and she nodded slowly.

“I dreamt that I really g-got into that accident…” Her voice shook and she began to sob. Being the bigger sister, I went over to her petite twelve year old body and enveloped her in a comforting hug, cooing to her, “It’s alright, it’s just a dream.”

“I-I-I got raped!” She cried out and I stopped functioning for a few moments, trying to process what she just said. My sister was raped? When? I cursed myself for not looking out for her more often.

When I stared at her, Amerthyst had a smirk plastered on her face and then she burst out laughing. At first it sounded like her normal laughter, but then it grew deeper and deeper…

It was Zayne… again?

My sister’s eyes flashed, a luminous grass green pair of eyes replacing her amethyst ones. Yes, my parents named us after our eye colours, pretty unique don’t you think?

“You should’ve seen your face, my dear Hayzel.” Zayne’s voice teased, but it sounded weird because it was coming out of my sister’s mouth.

Furrowing my brow, I hissed, “Zayne, get out of my sister’s body. You- You can’t just possess innocent people like that.”

Zayne got up from the bed and folded his arms, “Make me.” It was quite humorous because Amerthyst had the habit of doing that as well.

Tilting my head, I couldn’t help but wonder how to do that, so I asked kindly, “How?” But instead of answering my question, Zayne chuckled deeply and pinched the bridge of his… or her nose while shaking his… or her head.

“Wait right here.” He smirked and strode out of my room. Obviously tempted to follow him, I got up from my bed, stalking after him and hoping to stop him from doing anything mean to my poor sister.

My sister’s body trailed into her room and I did a little ninja-against-the-wall action while pacing to her room as well. When I got in, Zayne was in his own body, leaning against her window and smirking at me while Amerthyst’s little body was peacefully asleep.

“You do know that you need to improve on your ninja skills, right?” He mocked and I grimaced at him. “Don’t question my ninja skills, now shoo! Go get some yogurt and eat it in an igloo.” I turned up my chin at him, instantly regretting it as his green eyes flashed sinisterly.
