Chapter 9

She's a mirage

LIAM

I opened my eyes, feeling the warmth beside me. I could hear her even breathing, the smell of peaches filling the air. I stretched my arms out while my vision adapted to the day light. I slowly turned around and just stared at her, long locks of dark hair falling all over her face. Then I blinked and MJ was gone, instead replaced by a peacefully sleeping Danielle.

That's been happening a lot lately. I see her, MJ, from the moment I wake up momentarily, which always messes with my mind. I don't get it either, I finally got what I wanted, but why am I dreaming of her?

Danielle was surrounded by the blanket, an old habit of hers. Sometime during the night, she had somehow taken all of it, and was partially snuggling up to it.

I shivered, it was bloody freezing. Behind her the windows we're frosted, with day break just starting to turn the frost into droplets of moisture. I watched as a droplet slid down on to the window pane, creating streaks wherever it went.

I yawned loudly, stirring Danielle. A soft smile appeared in her pretty face. I leaned in and covered her face with butterfly kisses. She frowned and edged away, looking at me weirdly.

Oh right, it was MJ who liked those.

I gave Dani a goofy smile, and she couldn't help but smile back.

I stretched my arms out as she cuddled up to me, "morning beautiful" I said, my voice husky. The cute dimples I liked so much made an appearance as she gave me a chaste kiss on the cheek.

"Morning" she mumbled. "Do we have to get up?" She said, her voice soft.

I chuckled, "'fraid so, the lads are coming around" I got up and stretched out some more.

"I'll go shower" she said.

"And I'll make breakfast" I said smiling.

"Nah babe, I don't really do breakfast" as she said that, I couldn't help but notice the way her retreating back seemed to look like skin and bones. She had lost more weight since the last time, if that was at all possible.

I ran my hands through my hair and sighed. I had the lads coming over since things had been kind of tense to say the least. Something had changed and I was hoping that today would bring things back to normal.

I got up and slipped on a white shirt, just waiting for Dani to finish taking a shower. But after half an hour she still wasn't done. Some things never change. I thought to myself, smiling.

I went down the stairs and prepared myself some cereal. I ate slowly, my mind wandering to a time that I kept going back to. The last time I saw MJ. I had never seen her cry, she had always been happy around me, keeping up a poker face, and to see her get undone the way she did, it tugged at something deep inside me.

I closed my eyes and its as if I was back there again, looking at those dark brown eyes with the pain that I had inflicted.

Why are you still thinking about her? The voice inside my head asked. It's a question I had been asking myself for a while. Despite having everything I had ever wanted, the confusion was still there.

I played with my breakfast as I heard Dani come down the stairs. She looked great, her features heightened by the carefully applied make up. Her hair was no longer in disarray, which surprisingly enough I found disappointing. I shook my head, I got to get out of my own head, because I was starting to get ridiculous.
