Chapter Six: Comrades

Clara stared at the cell phone with disbelief. She tried not to let herself get too hopeful, but it was hard. Wyatt and Dylan were downstairs discussing something quietly, and one of them had seemingly forgotten their phone upstairs.

She’d found it in the office, lying discarded among the papers. After a moment collecting herself, she swiped it up and walked calmly back to her room, resisting the urge to sprint. She slowly closed the door behind her, making sure to be quiet.

She sank down on the bed, opening the old phone and typing in a number she had memorised. She stopped just before she could press dial. What would she say to him? He couldn’t help her without endangering himself. But even after only a week, she missed him. She pressed dial.

He picked up on the first ring.

“Clara? Are you there?” he said quickly, worry evident in his tone.

“Yeah.” She replied quietly, smiling slightly.

“I thought you were dead.” Her brother said, his tone flat. “Garrett and Theo got back yesterday and told everyone what happened.” By everyone, he meant a rather small group of people. Luke had met them through one of their many high schools a few years ago, and in total there were only about ten hunters.

“I’m fine, Luke.” She sighed. “Please tell me you didn’t do anything stupid.” He was silent for a moment.

“I got into a fight with Theo.” He admitted. “They threw me out. But I’m on my way, Clara, I can get you out of there! Tell me where you are.”

“No!” she said sharply. “Turn around and go home. I’m safe, okay? You just can’t come here. You’ll be killed.” Her eyes prickled with tears, but she fought them back. She hadn’t cried in years, and wasn’t about to start now.

“Are you kidding? I’m not leaving you there to die!” he snapped back. “Now tell me where you are.”

She shook her head, knowing he couldn’t see her. “I’m not going to die, Luke. I just want to let you know that I’m safe, and I’ll get back somehow.” She promised.

Before he could protest, she hung up, hanging her head and dropping the phone on the bed.

“Who was that?” a voice startled her, and she spun around on the bed to face the door. Wyatt stood in the frame, looking a little angry. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

“My brother.” Clara told him quietly. “He just wanted to make sure I was okay.” He walked towards her, bracing his hands on the side of the bed.

“I heard.” He said. “I wouldn’t kill him, you know.” Still blinking away the remaining tears, she raised an eyebrow with a wry smile.

“Then he would kill you.” She stated. He looked like he was going to say more, but they were interrupted by a shout.

Wyatt was out of the room in an instant, and Clara struggled to keep pace. From the stairs she could hear yelling and loud noises – it sounded like people were fighting. She strode into the front room a few seconds after him, taking in the scene very quickly.

Dylan was attempting to restrain a large, furious-looking man. The bulky, middle-aged man snarled at the sight of her, shoving the other werewolf aside.

You.” He growled. Wyatt was in front of him before he could take another step, grabbing his shoulders and shoving him back out of the open door.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing, Daniel?” he yelled. Clara made a move to follow, but she was pulled back. She turned to Dylan holding her arm with a solemn expression that looked alien on him. Seeing the pleading look in his eyes, she closed the door and turned fully around.
