Chapter 27

            “Get out, now.”

            “But sir, the trail-“

“I said get out,” seething visibly at the man; I smirked internally as he flinched before quickly fleeing. I slowly lowered myself into my chair, the brief amusement I had witnessed from his terror leaving me as I stared at the date on my calendar. Two days, Mallory had been missing for two days and we were no closer to finding her then we were two days ago. I propped my elbow up against my desk chair and leaned my head into my hand, covering my eyes as I took a deep breath.

I hadn’t slept in over 48 hours and it was slowly starting to take effect. The inner turmoil of not having my mate with me was one of the worst things I’d ever imagined. The worry I felt was even worse. I was constantly on edge, snapping at everyone and it was all because on girl was missing from my life.

            One very important girl, granted.

“Very smooth,” Ashen sang as he perched on the arm of one of the chairs I had placed randomly in the room. I rolled my eyes behind my hand, giving him a grunt for an answer.

“Well, there goes our last trail,” Mary muttered dejectedly, letting out a depressed sigh of her own. As anticipated, Mary had formed a small friendship with Mallory and was almost as worried about her as I was.

            Almost.

“There has to be something else!” I insisted, slamming my hands down on my desk. “Something we missed,” neither of them flinched at my hard tone; it wasn’t the first rage I had vented off in the last two days. Zack and Kane stood near the door, both leaning calmly against the wall as I internally raged on. I felt the color of my eyes flicker, my wolf poking at the surface. He was ready to rip away from me and search for our Mallory himself, thinking he could do better.

I mentally snarled at him, pushing him back into a cage so that he wouldn’t be a threat to others around me.

“What about you two? Any news on the twins?” I snapped at them next. The harsh feelings caused by their mistreating’s of Mallory were still there and surfacing.

“Actually,” Kane started steadily, slowly shoving away from the wall. “Zack here did pick up a scent about six miles from our last point, almost half an hour into the forest. It resembled your boy Lukes scent,” he stated, giving Zack a look. He seemed to take that as some sort of cue.

“It wasn’t too faint, only a day or less old strangely enough.” I narrowed my eyes suspiciously; feeling a strange sensation arise when he didn’t meet my eyes directly.

“You didn’t follow the trail anywhere?” I attempted to hide my suspicion as I spoke, not wanting to scare them off; something wasn’t right.

“We decided to come tell you first, see if you were interested in coming along,” as Kane shrugged, I knew immediately that something wasn’t right. Since when did these idiots wait for direct orders to do anything?

“I certainly am interested; you didn’t pick up anything on Mallory, though?” they shook their heads and another small piece of hope in me died, making me clench my jaw and look away.
