Chapter 9

The Candles

"Okay guys," Charlotte addressed Amily, Riley, and Benny. "We should go separate ways and light the candles around the house. Divide and conquer, you know?" The three nodded, silent.

"Is Ethan gonna be okay?" Amily wondered out loud. Charlotte turned and started walking toward the kitchen.

"Of course he will be, stupid. He's strong." But there was an uneasy edge in her voice. Amily stayed still for a moment before finally walking the other way, upstairs. Riley and Benny shared a glance before she came back down, went into the kitchen, came out with a lighter, and went back upstairs without a word.

Soon, the house smelled like a mix of maple and pumpkin, lacing the air with light and warmth.

"Oh! We haven't gotten the dining room yet!" Amily blurted and hurried into the dining room from where they had been chatting with Ethan. She lit the candle in the middle of the table and on the small hatch.

When she turned, however, she bumped the wood, causing the burning candle to fall. She walked back into the living room, unknowing of the impending danger.
