Will They be Remembered

An adventure, a journey,

Was what we all thought

We’ll be heroes, honoured

Proudly we stood tall

Boarding the ship to our destiny.

It was nothing like I expected,

As I choked on the gas

Fighting through smoke,

The smell of death in the air.

The exchange of fire endless.

Down in the trenches

Rats everywhere

Crawling over the dead

The wounded solders cries

Echo through the trenches.

I hold me friend close,

As the wound in his chest worsens

His eyes slowly glaze over

His hand limp in mine

My sobs unheard over the roar of battle.

White crosses in a row

Flanders field deathly silent,

As I stand there I can’t help but wonder

Is war worth the lives paid?

Will they be remembered?
