Brandon, Ariana, Adrian, and I were all sitting in my fathers house trying to come up with a plan. I guess we really didn't mind that our fathers were putting us on the front lines. It had always been this way. "Aly, are you even listening?" Adrian said, giving me a quizzical look. "Sorry I zoned out." He gave me a small concerned look, before returning to the conversation.

The doorbell rang, and I jumped up, looking for a quick exit. I ran to the door and opened it. In front of me stood a blonde girl, and Hispanic guy, and a brunette girl. The blonde wrapped me in a hug screaming my name. "Allyson! I haven't seen you in forever!" Allyson was my best friend. Her father wasn't high in rank, and my family tried to protect her from the media, which in turn meant I didn't get to see her much. She worked in the IT department. She and Kyle, the guy, provided most of the technological security. However, Kyle's real specialty was weapons. You give him material and he could make anything. The brunette, Kait, I didn't know as well, I just knew she was one of the best doctors I could find. Everyone who knew her said she was a stickler for the rules. That was going to be the problem here. "Por favor, come inside." I said. The brunette gave me a quizzical look. "¿Dios mio, tu no habla espaniol?" I asked, somewhat exasperated. Allyson whispered in her ear, translating what I had said. Kait shook her head quickly and stepped inside, like a frightened chicken. As she moved into the living room I had Mike take their bags.

"Okay guys, this is our non fighting team." I said, as my sister and the boys turned to stare at me. "You all remember Allyson Goodwright." Adrian jumped up to give her a hug. "This, this, is my baby sister right here." He said in a booming voice, imitating my father. "Yes, well, she works computers now. You name it, she can hack it." Here she butted in, "Before the United States was extinct, I used to hack into their files." She said proudly, "Still do." Brandon looked at her in amazement. "Here, Allyson, this is your field tablet, I suggest you start getting everything ready, there's a room full of technology to the right. Like, 15 million dollars worth. Have fun." She darted off to the room like a kid in a candy store. By now, Kyle was about to jump out of his pants. "What about me?" He asked. I laughed, "Guys this is Kyle. He builds weapons, he fixes weapons, he tweaks weapons. He is a weapon. Your toys-" I was cut off by Brandon here. "I've actually got some stuff you can play with in the armory." He said, "Come on." Brandon hopped off the couch and Kyle followed him like an excited puppy.

Ariana, Adrian, and Kait were the only ones still in the room with me. "What about her?" Ariana asked expectantly. "She's a doctor, and a scientist." I said, giving my sister a pointed glare. "And her toys?" She said, giving me an equally hard stare. "Upstairs, to the right." Ariana smiled at Kait, and said, "Come on, I'll take you."

Now it was just Adrian and I in the living room, all plans of selections forgotten. I was thoroughly annoyed with Kait, and I was also a bit nervous about being thrown into my first war. Sure I had been in battles before, but nothing like a full on war. I plopped down on the couch next to Adrian. He rubbed my arm, "You okay?" I nodded. Adrian chuckled, "That was a stupid question. No you're not. Come on, let's take a walk." He said pulling me up by my hand. I sighed, I just sat down. I slipped on my sandals and walked outside to the rose garden. "Hey, this is gonna be hard on everyone. But it's gonna be harder on me and you." I raised my eyebrow at him. "Why me and you?" I asked. "We're sixteen." He replied, "We're supposed to be going on cute coffee dates, and getting drunk illegally. Not spending our nights in tents when it's raining in thirty degree weather afraid that if you move a snipers bullet will take your life. But, the thing is; we aren't afraid, because this is our life. You bottle up your fear and release it like a venom, turning it into pure fury." I laced my fingers in his, and ran my other hand through my hair. Adrian pulled me into a side hug, while we watched the butterflies. "But this is our life. We just have to make the most of it." I smiled. He always knew what to say to get me out of a mood. "I love how this is a one way conversation." He laughed, "Anything to make you happy Aly." He gave my hand a squeeze, and said, "But on a serious note, don't bottle up your emotions, come to me." I looked up at him, "I can live with that Blancaje." "Good." He replied, "Now let's go make some cookies." This translated to food fight and he knew it. We never made food together, ever, because most of the food usually ended up on the floor. But I guess today he wanted to mess up his outfit. I certainly wasn't going to complain. "Hey lovebirds!" I heard a voice yell out the window, "Allyson just found the perfect way to select our team. Get over here." I glanced at Adrian, "Guess those cookies will have to wait." I said. He nodded, and we both bounded inside. Allyson finding a solution to our problem meant we could start training earlier, and time was sacred.
