In your nightmares....

"I'm sorry," she said.

I gulped, not wanting to hear the next few words coming out of her mouth.

I couldn't stop them though, much to my disappointment.

"I'm going to have to break up with you!"

She released a breath and glanced nervously to the side, seeming to regret speaking but not attempting to undo her words.

The words were knives to my heart. They slit it and tore it into shreds.

"No!" I exclaimed

"I can't let you do this, not to me, not after we've been together so long and done so much."

"I'm sorry," she said, though I strongly doubted it.

"I just have to, don't you understand?"

I didn't and said so.

She sighed, running an elegant hand through her silky, chestnut hair, hair that had enthralled me and still did, hair that made me want to run my hands through it time and time again. But I couldn't especially not now, not after what she was doing to me.

"Why?" I gulped, my voice was shaky; I couldn't stop it.

"I have to, but you must learn to read the clues." came the reply.

What did she mean? I wondered and was about to ask but she was gone, running down the road and running out of my life.

I woke up, sweating. It was 3:00am and I was absolutely shattered, exhausted more like. Despite having to get ready for school in a few hours, I decided an early morning run wouldn't hurt.

It always helped numb the pain.

But I couldn't shake those painful memories out of my head; not even the numbness of running could help me this time. They weren't what you would call serious nightmares but they were horrible enough. Several visits to the psychologist had been recommended by my friends and family but they didn't help. They couldn't prevent my unstoppable imagination. How could they? Putting my feelings 'in a box at the back of my head' (it's what the psychologist said) didn't help because every night my uncontrollable brain would fish them out and distort them, change them, hence the nightmares.

Suddenly, a BANG rippled through the air. I stopped mid jog, alarmed. A scream ran out from the house I was beside, naturally I ran into it....
