Lucy had always been aware of her potential to be the perfect child. She was smart enough, and she was quiet, which her teachers always liked. She was a good kid, the kind of friend parents hope their child will make.

Truth is, Lucy was only quiet because every time she opened her mouth, she felt like an idiot.

It was fourth grade english class. English was Lucy's worst subject because when she stared at the words, it was like they were jumping off the page at her. She kept staring, and they kept getting blurrier, swimming in front of her eyes.

Mrs. Brady, with her nails-on-chalkboard voice, wasn't helping either. "Who can tell me how to spell 'grateful? Lucy?"

"Uhhhh..." She could feel the eyes of her classmates burning into her skin, hotter the longer she stalled. "G-R-A-T... F-U-L."

"Not quite."

And when she felt like an idiot, that's when the bad thoughts happened.

She could jump off the roof of her house. She could find her dad's gun in the old storage locker. She could jump into her neighbor's pool, touch the bottom, and never leave...

She didn't know when they'd started, but she guessed she'd just been born with them. When the thoughts started, the panic attacks were next, and then the world would start spinning too fast and the lights would be too bright and every sound would shatter her eardrums.
