“So, Mister Kinson, did you tell her how you feel?” Doctor Windsor asked, her pen pressed into her clipboard.

“We almost kissed.” Kettu said, “And if it hadn’t been for that nurse of yours, we would have.”

“My apologies, but he was only doing his job.”

“He could’ve had some courtesy and waited five seconds.” Kettu growled. After the excitement had worn off, frustration and anger took its place. He couldn’t believe just how close they’d come to kissing each other, which made Kettu realize that maybe he wasn’t the only one with feelings in this relationship.

There was a chance, at least, of Nina having feelings for him as well.

“So what did you two talk about?” Doctor Windsor asked.

“She said she was proud of me, for getting help and asked me if I had started to see the beauty in everyday things.”

“Excuse me?” Doctor Windsor asked, peering over the edge of her glasses, an eyebrow raised.

“She had been teaching me to find reasons to live before I came in here. She showed me how to see things differently, how to observe the world around me instead of just live in it, and that alone . . .” Kettu stopped, his eyes focusing in on his surroundings. The rays of outside sunlight cast a beam of diagonal light throughout the room. The cold, lifeless shades of grey began to remind him of stones set by a lakeshore in the summer, the off-white bed sheets reminded him of the warmth of his mother‘s smile. His gaze shifted to the light and he watched as dust particles drifted lazily through the air on a long journey to the floor, like snowflakes under the illumination of a street lamp at night. The room was alight, alive with vibrant colours and warmth, it had transformed from something ugly and cold into something wonderful, something warm and beautiful, as if a God had intervened and blessed the room with all the beauties of the heavens. The hairs on the back of Kettu’s neck stood up, his eyes alight now with revelation. This had been the feeling that he had had whenever he played music, that frozen moment of time where everything harmoniously resonated with him, and left him with only one feeling;

Peace.

“Mister Kinson?”

“Everything is beautiful.” Kettu said quietly. “Absolutely everything, if you just look at it with your eyes truly open.”

“Mister Kinson, are you alright?”

“Doctor Windsor,” Kettu said, slowly standing up, “I think that my rehabilitation has been a great success.” His eyes still beholding the splendour of all that was around him.

“It’s only been two days, Mister Kinson.”

“And it’s been very productive, Doctor Windsor. It’s a passion that could only be explained to me in ways that I could understand that I have been missing in my life, and I realize that now, even without Nina, I will always have the glory of all that is around me, no matter where I am.”

“I wouldn’t advise it.” Doctor Windsor raised an eyebrow.

“I know, but should I start having harmful thoughts toward myself again, you have my word that I will return here, without hesitation.” Kettu looked over at Doctor Windsor, a warm smile on his face.

   "Given the circumstances of your commitment here, Mister Kinson, I have no choice but to comply with what you are asking to do,  but if I may, I would suggest staying with a friend for the time being in case anything changes.”

“I will. I know just the guy.”
