For a while, Kiäna and her new friends ate in silence, but finally, Kiäna tried to talk with them. "Where are you from?" she asked.
The boy, Chadwick, put his hands up and shrugged. He gestured impatiently and added a few words, which Kiäna couldn't comprehend. Talking was pointless. Then she saw something that made her look again in surprise. Chadwick had a tiny yellow lizard on his wrist. A fluffy lizard with butterfly wings. It was beautiful!
Chadwick saw her face and held his arm up to show her the strange creature. "Stella," he said.
"Stella," Kiäna repeated with a smile.
Tajana went to a pouch hanging on her belt and pulled out a tiny white horse. The creature reared back on its hind legs and grew to the size of a fawn.
Kiäna jumped up in surprise. Tajana said something in a soothing voice, and Kiäna sat back down, her cheeks red with embarrassment. "Dushan," Tajana said while patting the white horse's back. That's when Kiäna noticed that Dushan had a beautiful icy white horn on his forehead.

"Wow!" she said. What sort of sorcery did they have that allowed them to grow like that? It was like Fulgarian growth magic! Maybe these children were from Fulgaria. But no, they weren't giants like the Fulgarians. They couldn't be.
These creatures had to be from the Fulgarians' allies in the water realm. That must be where her new friends were from!
Finally, Thea put her hand in her pocket and pulled out two creatures. A horse with wings, which reared back and grew to the size of a fox. And the winged panther, who sat on her shoulder and stared at them. "Celeste Cecelia," Thea said, patting the winged horse. "Pax," she added, pointing to the winged panther cub on her shoulder.
