Jessica O'Lauryn

The whistle blows behind us, "What the hell are you doing, Carlen? You're a linebacker not a freakin' tackle!" It's the assistant coach of the football team.

I focus on Cazetti, she seems out of her element, throwing too short, screwing up obviously easy plays and getting tackled by the teammates she should've seen coming.

I roll my eyes. "I can't watch this anymore," I say to Sam, who is sitting next to me waiting for the other half of the team to arrive.

"Then don't." I heard the slightest twinge of anger in her voice, but brushed it off, I've had enough drama for my llama in the past two weeks. Sam presses her hand into mine, "I think Ryder is cheating on me."

It was the lowest, saddest I've ever heard her voice be. "I doubt it. Who would cheat on someone like you?" I glance her up and down and bite my lower lip.

Bad timing, Sam looks over at me as my teeth drag back up, she scrunches up her face, "um. Hide your gay please."

Oh Lord.

I glance back at Cazetti, who, play after play is getting it wrong, and I can only think, what if she plays how she feels in life.

Play after play, she just..takes it how it is and does the best she can. It's inspiring, I can see how she made All-American last year. I want her, so bad.

"Jess."

"Hmm?"

"Jess."

I turn my head toward Sam, "yes?"

"Ask her out."

I'm pretty sure the look on my face is a lot to take in because she starts to laugh. "She's the guy in this relationship! I'm not asking anyone out." Crossing my arms, I glare at Sam.

Sam frowns, "she'll never ask you out. She's afraid."

Afraid? "What the- of what? She's not afraid of anything." My gaze slips from Sam back to Cazetti as I take a seat next to the cheerleader.

I feel her shrug next to me, "Hayley and Cazetti, they're on the same terms, it may not look like it, by the way she dresses but Hayley's family aren't so well off. It was easy for Cazetti to find a nerve to ask her out because there was no reason Hayley would say no." She shoves me playfully, "you on the other hand," a pause, but I knew what she was about to say.

"Yeah, I know, my car is worth more than her house..." My voice and head low. "But I would totally say yes-"

"Say yes to what?" A familiar voice and pair of cleats appear out of seemingly nowhere.

I can feel Sam hold back a laugh as her body jerks, "I'll leave you two alone," she uses the fence to stand up and hobble towards the other players.

Cazetti's gaze still on me, I stand as well. "I've heard that the unshakeable is a little," I get close and whisper in her ear "shaken up about a certain question."

The sudden stiffness in the quarterbacks body is obvious and quite adorable. "I, um, don't know what you're talking about."

Rolling my eyes and frowning, she really won't do it huh? "Be my girlfriend."

I really didn't mean to say that. I wasn't even thinking it.

Shit.

I glance up at my crush, hoping she's not embarrassed or however she's supposed to be feeling. Her hazel eyes wide, mouth agape, and hands shaking by her sides, she nods, "okay."

Did I just hear her right? I smile, quickly, then suddenly get angry at realizing what just happened. "You realize I'm going to hold this above you for, like, the rest of your life right? I can't believe I had to ask you!" Pushing her slightly away, she comes back smiling and plants her lips softly on mine.

I hear an eruption of football players cat calling and whooping as I melt under Nani. I would definitely have fallen if her arm didn't wrap around my waist and hold me up. Her lips are so soft, and careful and-

A whistle blows, "Cazetti, get your ass back on this field before I find a new starting quarterback!"

I almost got whiplash from how quickly she left.

Nani Cazetti

Did she really jus- Another tackle from my right crashes the thought process out of me as I release the ball from my grip. My body jerks violently as a heavier set guy plows me into the ground. The body is off of me in almost the same amount of time it got on me. I attempt to sit up and shake it off, but as soon as I move I start getting dizzy and noxious. "Jesus Christ, Palmer! Where were you?" The voices around me sound as if they're muffled by bubble wrap.

"Coach, she's not lookin' too good." I feel tingly.

"Get the trainer out here." A calm voice I know only because I've been hearing it for almost four years in a row fades in and out. Hayley. Hayley.

Another muffled voice beside me, softer, more homey, "He's out for the week, Cap't..." Something else is said but I can't hear them. My thoughts cross from Hayley to a strange girl with light brown curls. Jessica? Yeah, Jessica. Oh, she just asked me out. What happened with Hayley?

"Jessica?" I call out, hopefully loud enough. I hear a huff somewhere around me. The bubble wrap sound effects are starting to fade but I still feel noxious. I glance down when I feel a hand in mine, "Jessica?" I don't bother looking up. The lights are too damn bright. Is that the sun?

"No, babes, it's Sam," she squeezes my hand reassuringly and then messes with my braid, "Jess went to go get the nurse since the trainer is out." Another squeeze, "don you think you can make it to the bench?" I lift my head, apparently in the wrong direction because she guides my head by my chin. It's a little far but I feel like I can manage it. "Hey, wake up. Do you think you can make it?"

I think I nod. I'm guessing I did because someone hoists me up from the back and slowly helps me to the bench. "Thanks." I hear myself grumble.
