Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease is a condition affecting the lining of the small intestine, causing it to become damaged when exposed gluten (found in wheat, barley, rye and oats). This means those with coeliac disease absorb food and nutrients poorly. The diagram above shows the lining of the small intestine. Villi increase the surface area of the intestine, and thus help with absorption of nutrients. However those with coeliac disease have abnormal smooth tissue that thus reduces potential for absorption.

Symptoms
Symptoms associated with coeliac disease can vary from none at all to many. These may include:

☞ Diarrhoea,
☞ Weight loss,
☞ Malabsorption,
☞ Bloating,
☞ Flatulence,
☞ Nausea
☞ Abdominal discomfort.
☞ Tiredness & weakness (due to iron and/or folic acid deficiency, resulting in anaemia).

Less common symptoms include:

☞ Mouth ulceration,
☞ Recurring miscarriages or infertility

Some patients might be diagnosed following investigations for osteoporosis.

Coeliac Disease in Children and Youths
Coeliac disease presenting in children may cause:

☞ poor weight gain,
☞ delayed growth and development,
☞ irritability,
☞ poor appetite,
☞ bowel problems, and
☞ anaemia.

Screening & Diagnosis
Coelia disease can be genetic, and thus those with family members with coeliac disease should be tested. Diagnosis can be achieved through serology, endoscopy (and duodenal biopsy).  It is usual practice to do a repeat biopsy 12 months post diagnosis. Other tests at this time may include:

☞ Full blood count
☞ Iron, Vitamin B12, folic acid test, Thyroid function test
☞ Calcium, phosphate, vitamin D, zinc, ☞ PTH test (parathyroid test)
☞ Liver function test

TreatmentCoeliac disease is successfully treated by removing all gluten from diets, and symptoms should show and improvement and restoration of health once it has been completely removed from diets

Coeliac disease affects approximately 1 in 200 people in Australia.
