THE FINAL CHAPTER

ONLY ONE CAN SURVIVE

Lucas looked down at his reflection in the water outside the cave. This is the first time he's seen his face since before he even got his name called.

Seeing his face... looking into his own eyes... Knowing he's taken lives.

Knowing HIS life may be ending soon.

He doesn't know what to think.

All of a sudden, he hears,

"Hey,"

He looks up, and sees Max walk up to him.

"Can I sit next to you?"

"So, what, you can kill me?"

Max lets out a small smile as she sits next to him,

"I need you alive, Lucas. At least for now."

Lucas looks unamused, "Sure."

She looks at him, examines his demeanor.

"I can tell you're scared," she points out.

"Max," he looks over at her, "Don't try to calm me down or make me feel better. I know that when I look at you, I'm looking at her person who's probably gonna kill me."

Max takes a deep breath, "Look... even so, I wanna tell you something."

Lucas looks her in the eyes, "What?"

Max lets out another small smile, "I like you."

Lucas looks confused, and now his heart is racing.

"You... LIKE me?"

Max nods, "I do. You're a fighter, Lucas. A warrior."

Lucas looks away from her, "I just wanted to spend the rest of my life making food in District 12. I never wanted to be a 'fighter'. Just a cook."

"I understand," Max says, "But you're a fighter. I can see it."

All of a sudden, tears come out of Lucas' eyes.

"I just wanna go home," he cries.

"So do I, Lucas," she says.

He looks over at her, "Well, if one of us is gonna go home, the other has to die."

Max takes a deep breath, "I know."
She then puts her hand on his face.

"Max, what are you doing?"

"Lucas, whatever happens... I just want one thing from you."

"Ok..." Lucas' heart is pounding in his chest,

"What?"

"This."

She leans forward... and kisses him.

As Lucas feels Max' lips touch his, he feels like his heart is gonna fly out of his chest.

"HELLO REMAINING TRIBUTES!" The voice booms out, causing both Lucas and Max to jolt up.

"Jesus Christ!" Lucas exclaims, causing Max to laugh.

"THERE ARE ONLY SEVEN OF YOU LEFT. WE ARE ANNOUNCING A FEAST AT THE CORNUCOPIA. THE AREA HAS BEEN RESTOCKED WITH WEAPONS, SUPPLIES, AND FOOD. BUT IT WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE FOR A LIMITED TIME BEFORE COMBUSTING INTO FLAMES. RED SMOKE HAS BEEN SETUP THAT WILL BE VISIBLE ACROSS ALL THE AREA, DIRECTING YOU TO THE AREA. WILL ANY OF YOU ATTEND? WE ARE EAGER TO FIND OUT!"
