A Promise
"Will I see you again?"
"I don't know"
"Promise me."
"I don't make promises because I know I'll break them. I say yes, there's a better chance that we'll see each other."
"Please, promise me."
"No."
"Please, we could just be friends."
It'll be too hard for you and awkward for me. "No."
"Please, promise me."
I don't want to, but if I do he'll let me leave. I'll cross my fingers. I know the promise is going to be empty. I hope he can see it in my eyes.
"Okay, I promise."
He let go. With a final goodbye I open the door and step in without a backward glance.
I should have held my ground because I just gave him hope when I know I'm not going to call him anymore.
If I ever see him again I will not be able to face him.
