I Hold Her

A fallen soul
Who can not get up
Reaches out to me
And I lift her up,
Help her on to her bed
And she coils her arms around me
And lets out sobs,
Her entire body shakes,
And I hold her,
Rub small circles on her back,
Cradle her head,
And I hold her,
As she had done to me,
When I had fallen and scraped my knee,
Or when I had a bad dream and was scared,
When I could not be brave,
She was brave enough for the both of us.
How this brave soul became so broken,
I do not know,
But it was my time to be brave for the both of us
And I hold her.
I do not know what to say,
So I hold her.
"Thank you," she whispers.
I do not answer her,
And I hold her.
