With the ferolind beneath their feet, finally they could breathe, although the strong wind was biting enough to steal the air from their lungs. On the plus side, it would make their journey quicker.

Nina had swept herself away to the solitary prow of the ship in a bit of a whistful daze as soon as they began moving. It was fascinating to watch as her eyes flitted over every surface and inch of every persons face as though they were a book to read in a language only she could understand.

Inej had gone straight to Rotty to dig up the thick wool coats and the clothes they'd stashed below deck for the return, and even Nina had dared a smile at the fact the comically tiniest coat was (of course) handed to Mavka.

The girl this time did not have the energy to argue, and swathed her body in the thick wool, doing the buttons right up to her neck without anyone having to ask. She had practically buried the lower half of her face in the high collar, the sleeves bundled over her trembling hands and buried deep into her pockets.

For once in her life, Mavka did not like the cold.

It did not make her feel alive, it just hurt. Her body hurt, her head hurt. The ghost of aggressive fingers digging into her shoulders, the sides of her neck, her jaw - it worsened the pain, the mind numbing ache. It became all she could think about, the images flickering through her mind as she tried to focus on the rolling waves over the edge. The way they moved, the crashing sound in her ears.
