It's Not What It Seems

I had expected the worst but I wasn't at all prepared for what happened next. A smile; he just smiled at me. He was smiling? Did he think this was a joke? I would have

rathered

he turn his back from me, or get angry; something! "This isn't a joke Damien!" I was on the verge of tears.

"Joke?" He smiled wider. "Is that the big secret you have been keeping from me? That you’re a hybrid?"

I couldn't find my voice; I just didn't trust it. So, instead I could only nod, a tear escaped, rolling down my cheek.

"Alessa," Damien inched closer to me; his hand resting on my cheek wiping that single tear away ever so gently. "Alessa, look at me," I kept my eyes downcast staring the grass; anywhere but his eyes.

"Please?" I couldn't miss the sadness in his voice I could feel my heart sinking. I looked up at his face focusing everywhere but his eyes. I just couldn’t meet his eyes.

"Why would it matter to me that you’re a hybrid? I love you just the way you are."

My eyes focused on his mouth curved into that small smile that made my heart flutter. He loved me even though I was a hybrid. Wait, love? Had I heard him correctly?

"Love?" I whispered in a shaky voice I barely recognized as my own.

"Yes, you’re my soul-mate Alessa. How can I not love you?" My eyes finally met his. I was getting lost in those pools of copper and flames. Never had I seen more beautiful eyes. I tried to sink in his confessions; I couldn't help but think it was too good to be true.

'Oh nice Alessa. Way to ruin a beautiful romantic moment with your pessimistic worries and thoughts.'

'Leave me alone!' I yelled mentally.

'I'm your conscious! Remember? I'm here to help you out!'

'Right.' I shook my head to stop the mental war I was having with myself.

"You okay?" Damien asked with one eyebrow arched.

"Yeah, I'm just trying to make sense of all of this. You’re the first one to accept me for who I am besides my mother and my best friend Liana." A frown began to form on my lips remembering my mother and my best friend back at home.

"It's okay I can see you miss them we can always go ba-"

"No," I said cutting him off. "I can't."

"Why not?" He asked moving his hand from my cheek to my shoulder.

"I just can't okay?" I spat out.

"It’s okay. You don't have to tell me," taking his hand away to rub the back of his head. I couldn't help but feel somewhat sad at the loss of contact. I loved the way his hand felt there on my bare shoulder.

"You ready to go back now?" he asked looking off into the distance.

"You can go ahead, I'll meet you there, I want to be alone for a while." While that was only half true, I really didn't want him to go, but I needed to be by myself for a bit.

"You sure? I don't want to leave you out here by yourself." What a gentlemen; note the lack of sarcasm.

"Yeah, I just want to relax and think about some stuff."

"Well, alright but don't stay out here too long."

"What are you my mother?" I giggled.

"Nah, just someone who loves you." My face started to heat up and I couldn't help the big goofy grin that played across my face; oh man I was so lame!

Without another word Damien got to his feet and began walking back to the mansion leaving me there lying on my back, staring up at the clouds.

'These are the times I wish I hadn't left my cell phone behind.'

A Best Friend's POV

Where is she? She has been gone for days and there has been no sign of her. I began to write her yet another text message; I must have sent her over a dozen of them in the last hour at least.

Alessa! Where are you? Call me!

"Darling, come down stairs it's dinner time!"

"Coming mother!" I yelled back to her.

I closed my phone, placing on the end of my bed. I walked over to my closet and unlocked it turning on the light as I stepped inside. If you thought that this would be an ordinary closet; well, you guessed wrong. I walked into my enormous walk in closet. There should have been clothes hanging and shoes placed neatly inside but none were to be found. Instead in the back of it were pictures that cover the entire wall. Pictures of Alessa. Some were with me but they were mostly in her room where she was either changing, walking through the halls at school or eating a dinner with her mom. People would say I'm crazy and obsessed but I just called it love.

Yes, was in love with my best friend; I’d admit it.

I leaned towards my favorite picture of her where she was smiling at the camera. I had taken it while we were hanging out at the park. I kissed it. "I love you Alessa. We'll be together again soon."

"Liana! Come down stairs to eat! Now!"

"Yes ma'am! Coming!" I called over my shoulder. I turned off the light to the closet, shutting and locking the door behind me. I looked back at the closet and smiled, "Together, forever."

"Miss Alessa! It's Lunch time!" I heard Maria call out for me.

Wow how long had I been out here staring at the clouds? Time really flied. "Coming," I call as I scrambled to my feet.

As I made my way inside I saw Damien sitting at one end of the dining table with a smile plastered on his face as I made my way to my seat on the other end.

My heart began to speed up and I return the smile.

It still baffled me how handsome this guy was. If it didn't sound so lame of me to say; this man was drop dead gorgeous.

"What's on the menu today?" I asked scooting my chair closer to the table.

"If it were up to me you would be," he said giving me that devastating smile. His statement made my skin hot while his smile made my heart soar.

"For lunch we have mini burgers and homemade fries," Maria said as she placed the dish in front of me.

"Oh! Hamburgers my favorite! How did you know?"

"Sir Damien asked me to prepare it for you," she said just before she walked away to continue her maid-like duties.

"Dig in," Damien chuckled.

"You’re not eating?"

"I'm a vampire remember? I don't eat, just drink," he winked.

Oh yeah, I’d nearly forgotten.

Afterwards when I was done with my meal Damien stood up and walked over next to me. "Alessa?"

"Yes?" I looked up at him.

"Would you like to-to go out with me tonight?" he asked stumbling over his words.

I blushed. "S-sure, where will we be going?"

"It's a surprise," he beamed at me.

Surprise? I hated surprises but I guess I could grin and bear it.
