We drove up the narrow, unwinding road

We drove up the narrow, unwinding road. The dense forest on either side seemed to close in all around us, casting long shadows that danced ominously in the fading light coming from the sunset. The cabin emerged from the trees like a creepy solitary structure, its weathered wood blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

Ignoring the blatant unease, Miya eventually parked the car on the dirty road and took a deep breath. "Alright, Nikolai's cabin is just up ahead." She announced.

"A cabin in the middle of the woods where you don't have to deal with people's bullshit? How very fitting for someone like Nikolai." Atalia stated as we got out of the car. "And his bitch ass still hasn't texted me back." She softly groaned before shoving her phone back into her pocket.

I spoke throughout our footsteps. "So I have to ask, how is it like having him as an Alpha? Or is that what you guys call it?" Miya and Atalia exchanged a knowing glance before erupting into laughter. Perplexed, I nervously chuckled, hoping to decipher the cause of their amusement. "What? What's so funny?"

"It's just that the whole pack thing is kinda cringe to us, honestly." Atalia replied, her laughter subsiding.

Miya meekly nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we don't really play into the whole pack dynamic thing. Although there are very real and valid reasons as to why a lot of them exist all over the world, for us personally we just see ourselves as friends who watch each other's backs."

"Oh, I see." I lowly murmured. "It's just that I remember my dad talking about it once. He says there's some kind of social hierarchy that's determined by coatings, and eye colors, and what not."

Miya reluctantly nodded, her tone indicating a natural dismissiveness toward the topic. "Technically that's all true, but again, we don't really play into it. And besides, Atalia absolutely hates the idea of being a Beta while Nikolai is apparently the Alpha because of some biological disposition."

"Really?" I couldn't help but faintly laugh as Atalia rolled her eyes back in annoyance.

"It's complete bullshit." She snided. "And even if we were to go off of that social hierarchy thing, Nikolai would be a shitty Alpha. Not only does he thinks he's too cool to care about anything, but he's also really weak. I mean you saw the way I got him off of you that one time you guys fought in the forest! Shit, if anything I should be Alpha."

"I don't think I ever got to thank you for that, you saved my life that day." I breathed out, a sense of gratitude welling up inside me.

"Pfft, don't even mention it." She nonchalantly waved off.

"You looked really cool in your wolf form too." I added, slightly marveling at the memory. "Kinda made me jealous I didn't have one."

"Oh please, it's not anymore cooler than having the ability to heal so fast." Atalia outweighed.
