Chapter Forty-Two

~Thea's POV~

The next morning, I wake up with my head on Angelique, and Videl's arm thrown around my torso. Wriggling up, I push the blankets back and climb over Videl, landing on the hardwood floor. We had all fallen asleep on the same bed last night, after watching about four Christmas movies on the tiny television.

"Thea?" grunts Videl, not moving, his eyes still closed. He's been doing a lot more sleeping than I've ever seen him. I suspect he's trying to save up on energy.

            "Yeah?"

            "What...are you...doing...?"

"I'm getting up," I whisper, "I'm not tired."

He doesn't answer for a second, and at first, I think he's asleep. But then, he mumbles, "Stay in the room."

"Can't I just go to the beach?"

            "...No..."

"C'mon, Videl, we've been here for a month, and nothing's going to happen right at this second. You'll get up soon, and-"

"Fine," he groans, throwing a pillow over his head, "Go away."

"Okay," I say, "Night night, sleep tight."

"Shut...up." Videl rolls over so that he's closer to Angelique. I'm fairly certain he's about two inches from her. Probably less.

I grab my backpack from the corner of the room, where most of my stuff is scattered, and walk out, closing the door quietly behind me.

Wairua is in the kitchen, and his eyes dart over to me as soon as I walk in.

"I need to change," I inform him, "So turn around, I don't care if you're an owl."

He hoots dolefully, and then, flapping his wings, turns so that he is now facing the refrigerator instead of me."

            "Thank you, Hedwig," I say.

Wairua flaps his wings indignantly. He hates it when I calm him Hedwig.

I change into my beach shorts and a t-shirt of Angelique's, then walk out of the room quickly, before Videl can wake up completely.

I hadn't expected Videl to agree to let me go out to the beach, but it's probably because he's still half-asleep. In about an hour or so, when the sun is fully up, he'll probably jump up and run down to the beach, yelling at me. I look forward to it.

It's quiet at the hotel, and the surrounding area. There's a slight breeze, that carries the faint smell of salt, pushing me towards the peaceful crashing of the waves.

Only a handful of people are on the beach right now, mostly early-morning surfers and the occasional honeymooning couple. I walk past them all, kicking up sand, and head straight towards the hammock that we had used two nights ago.
