One morning I discovered something terrible. Every flower in Fred's garden was gone. I wondered who the hell would do such a thing. Surely not Sophie. Perhaps the flowers had died, I thought, but then I went in for a closer look. They really did look like they'd been cut. I wondered how I was going to break it to Fred. Sophie was out in the city so I couldn't ask her, and either way I couldn't find Fred. So I set out to look for him.
Before I could find him, Sophie got back. I didn't even get a chance to ask her about the flowers, because as soon as she came into the kitchen Fred appeared – at least I figured it was Fred – because I couldn't see his face. I don't know where he'd found the wrapping paper, and he'd used about a mile of sticky tape. There were petals all over the floor.
When she realised what was going on Sophie started crying. I'd never seen her so emotional. She kept kissing him and kissing him.
"Did you do this?" she said to me.
I shrugged and shook my head.
"Oh Fred," she cried, and wrapped him in her arms again.
