Hayle’s POV

I was pacing the corridor by the healers room. I heard chants and felt power resonate form the room, they were performing magic on him.

Like all other merfolk I also had what my mother called a “gift”. Had the ability to create storms both above and below the sea. I shivered at the memory. The doors opened and a very elderly merwoman swam over to me, her old Parrot fish tail moving slowly, “my prince, “she bowed, “I have wonderful news.”

“what is it healer?” I inquired now relieved that this new was good.

“I think you had better see for yourself.” She motioned me to follow her, we entered the healing room where six other young merwoman were gossiping and pointing towards the bed where Derik lay, my eyes widened as I got closer, he wasn’t wearing an air bubble! I was about to cast one over his head when the elder stopped me, “no! this is what made him faint at first.” She moved to seat herself next to him and moved the sheet down from his neck to reveal on either side slits that moved giving Derik air, he had gills!

I stared at him then looked to the elder, “how is this possible?”  I asked her with clear shock on my face.

“I only have a theory, but when you put that ring on his finger did you know that it held magic within it’?”

“what does that have to do with any of this? A small amount of magic shouldn’t have done this to him!”

She held her hands up to silence me, “I understand that, but this ring is special, it holds someone’s wish granting ability inside, so I believe that this boy wished to be this way, or something along those lines.” She explained.

I looked back to Derik laying soundly with no care in the world, he even looked different, his once bronzed skin was now porcelain white like mine, his once black hair was now a dark shade of green that almost looked black, and his ears were now fanned out flat against the kelp pillow beneath him, they were a mix of the same dark green as his hair and spots of yellow running up the sides almost like scales.

My eyes widened, I reached for the sheet and pulled it off, his once beautifully muscular legs were replaced by a powerful looking serpent tail that coiled around the bed, it was amazing!

“He wished for this?” I asked to no one precise.

“I would only guess, but now we must wait for him to wake and listen to his piece of this mystery.” The healer said.

I nodded and went to the door, but stopped, “bring him to my quarters when you are finished I would rather him wake to his semi normal self rather than this.” I didn’t wait for an answer; I knew they would do as I commanded.

I wanted to tell my parents what had happened, they would be just as confused and amazed as I was still.

I opened the side door to the throne room and wrinkled my face at the sight, Artemis was there making a fuss about everything again.

“…and he just shoved past me! very rudely I might add!” she was telling them about my arrival into the city this morning. I just rolled my eyes and approached my parents ignoring Artemis' calls for me.

“mother, father.” I bowed formally to them, “I have come to tell you the situation with Derik.”

Their eyes dimmed in sadness and my father waved his hand anxiously for me to continue.
