FOR THE FIRST TIME in awhile, Jalen's life felt absolutely perfect and the high he was riding couldn't be matched by any strain you could find out there.
His daughter was upstairs, fast asleep, his fiancee was seated on his lap with her arm hanging halfway around his neck and their about to be blended family sitting around the fold up table on the patio for their impromptu engagement party.
Erin, Noelani's stepmother, stood up from the plastic table with a solo cup in one hand, "I wanna do a speech," She lifted the cup towards where the couple were sitting, "To the engagement."
On Jalen's right sat Anela, Noelani's mother, who in response to Erin's statement released an eye roll. "Mom," Noelani scolded her mother softly, leant forward and placed her left hand on Anela's shoulder for a moment or two.
