Chapter 27

"Sir, your wife should have woken up by now the fact that she hasn't means that she might not ever wake up, there is a decrease in her brain activity daily"

"So what are you saying?"

"If Mrs Downey doesn't wake up within the next 24-48 hours there is a very high chance she will never wake up and her brain will shut down"

"Brain dead?"

"Yes Sir"

"Isn't there anything you can do to wake her?"

"We have tried everything, her sedation has been removed right now sir we are waiting for her to wake up herself"

"Is there anything I can do?"

"No sir, this is something she has to do but I do have to say that in 48 hours if there is no change we will need to speak about removing the life support machine"

"If you remove that now will she wake up?"

"No right now that's what is helping her to breath and to keep her heart going"

"We need to find some way to save her"

"We are doing everything we can for her"

With those horrid words the doctor turns and walks out the door, walks out as if it's final. She was dying and there was nothing anyone could do but her to stop it. Your heart has been broken for weeks, you stay at the hospital day in day out never leaving her side. Robbie has been staying with Bella it's hard for you to be around him without feeling guilty. Even though it's not words that have been spoken but you know that deep down it's your fault she's here. An obsession put her in here.

You sit on the chair and close your eyes, that's the only way you can speak to her, hold her.

The next day
BELLA's POV

"He hasn't seen Robbie in over two weeks"
"Bella, it's hard for him"
"Raf this little boy is losing his mother, he needs his father"
"Bella, I will have Robbie, go and be with her"
"No she would want me here looking after him"
"He's fine with me, she would want you looking after him too"
"He doesn't want me there"
"I bet he really needs you there"
"I can't"
"Why baby?"
"I can't say goodbye to her"
"You need to"
Your tears escape your eyes, he wipes it away with his finger and pulls you into him
"You'll regret it if you don't Bella"
"She's my sister Raf"
"So go be by her side"
You nod into his chest, you know he's right but how do you do it, how do you say goodbye to the only person who's really been there, the only person who ever believed in you, cared for you.
"Okay, watch him and if you need me call me straight away"
"Of course, he's fine with me I will take care of him"
"I know. I'll see you later"
You bend over the crib and kiss Robbie then walk out the house and make your way to the hospital.

Standing by the door to her room, you see Rob sitting in the chair next to her bed, he's holding her hand with his eyes closed, his face wet with obvious tears. You can't make yourself open the door you just stand there and watch him, watch his mouth move as he speaks to her.

"Excuse me miss, are you with Mrs Downey?"
"I'm... her sister"
"I need to give her husband some news I think it's best if you come into the room and be together"
"Is she going to be okay? Has there been improvements?"
"It's best I speak to you together"
"No tell me now, is she going to wake up?"
"Miss?"
"No don't Miss, me! I can't walk in there not knowing she's going to be okay or not! I need to support him and it's not going to happen if the news you have is bad! So tell me now! Is my sister going to wake up?"
"There's been no activity in Mercedes brain through all the tests we did through the night, unfortunately right now the only thing that is keeping her alive is the machines"
"So?"
"I'm very sorry"
"No"
"Miss we need to inform her husband"
"No you can't this is going to kill him, he lives and breathes for her"
"We have too, if you'd like to wait out here then I can do it alone"
"I can't be in there, I can't watch you destroy him. I feel like my whole world has exploded and I know it's going to hurt him in so many different ways"
"You can wait here and I will let him know that you are here"
You nod and sit on the chair processing what he just said, you watch him walk in the room! It feels like hours but it's only second when you hear him scream! His blood curdling heart breaking scream! The end of his world his life! There's a smash and the doctor quickly exits the room

"He needs you in there"
You nod and walk to the door and push the door open and he's there in the corner on the floor, the vase of flowers smashes beside him and he's crying the most heartbreaking cry, you walk to him and sit beside him

"I'm so sorry"
He can't speak, he can't breathe properly through the crying
"Rob you need to breathe"
He can't stop! How can he stop.
You take his hand and squeeze it, he squeezes your hand, it's the way you both know that your there for one another.

"Hey Raf it's me"
"Bella?"
"She's gone, they want Rob to give them the permission to turn off her machine"
"Oh my Bella I am so sorry, how are you doing?"
"I don't know"
"How's Robert?"
"He cried so much, smashed things but now he's just sitting there speechless, motionless and I don't know what to do"
"Just be there Bella"
"Is Robbie okay?"
"I got him he's fine. He has no ideas of what is going on"
"He's lucky he's a baby. But then again he's not because he's never going to remember her, he's never going to know how much she loved him"
"You will tell him everyday"
"I love you Raphael"
"I love you Isabella"

You hang up the phone and walk back into the room

"I just checked in on Robbie and he's okay"
He doesn't move.
"Do you want me to ask Raf to bring him here?"
Nothing!
"Rob?"

He's like a robot that's shut down, he hasn't got any emotion.

The doctor walks into the room

"I'm sorry to do this but we need to know if you have made a decision"
"I think we need more time, he's not ready"

"No—I"
He speaks, he looks up
"You do what you got to do, but I'm not leaving her"
"You can stay here, both of you can. We can arrange to do this tomorrow, it gives you all time to say goodbye"

It's been a few hours and Rob hasn't left her side, you've called Raf to bring Robbie in. He walks through the door pushing the baby in the pram and you walk to him, he grabs you and pulls you in as you finally break down in his arms.
