Paths

We chose this way, encouraged by friends and

Others we have loved, tempted by the twists

And turns and trees bent to breaking with the

Weight of low-slung fruit just beyond our reach.

We marvelled how we kept our footing on

Such uneven ground, loose stones tricksy in

Mottled shadows cast by glorious sun,

Our stumbles rare and slight and shrugged away.

We listened with rapt attention to the

Birdsong, heard anew with mystery and

A mad sense of joyous discovery,

Of seeing new things and playing new games.

For the first time  we told our stories with

Pride, that we might show the wisdom in our

Choices  and the beauty of a journey

That could be theirs if only they dare, too.

Old, quiet hankerings drowned in the din

Of new excitements, of plans and chances:

The challenge to us to live differently

Our rapturous love and earnest desires.

Now, we wonder what lay down other paths,

What beauty we might have happened upon

And claimed had we believed in ourselves -

Trusted in that arrogance of brash youth.
